NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma rowing team posted three top-three finishes in the first two sessions of the Clemson Invitational Saturday against a field that included seven ranked teams.

The Sooners, receiving votes in the CRCA/US Rowing national poll, competed in the varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four, second varsity four and novice eight in the first two sessions in Clemson, S.C.

In a total of ten races that featured between four and seven teams in each contest, OU defeated four ranked teams at least once.

Saturday's first session saw the Sooners race against No. 3 Virginia, No. 4 Ohio State, No. 18 Louisville, Minnesota and Central Florida. In Saturday's afternoon session, OU faced off against Virginia, No. 5 UCLA, No. 13 Michigan, No. 19 Cornell, No. 20 Duke and Oregon State.

The varsity eight posted a fifth-place finish in the first session with a time of 6:43.2. The Sooners were just 2.9 seconds behind Minnesota, which finished fourth and ahead of Central Florida's 7:03.3. In the afternoon races, OU crossed the line in 6:27.5 and finished in seventh, behind sixth-place Oregon State by 1.1 seconds and behind fourth-place Duke by 2.4 seconds.

Oklahoma's second varsity eight notched two of OU's closest races of the day. The boat finished third in 6:44.0 in the morning round, 2.5 seconds behind the third-ranked and defending national champions Virginia. The Sooners followed it up with a fourth-place finish in 6:31.1, ahead of No. 13 Michigan, Oregon State and No. 20 Duke. The Cavaliers again finished ahead of OU in third by 4.1 seconds.

A 7:41.8 in the varsity four gave OU a fourth-place finish before a 7:28.0 in the second session resulted in a sixth-place finish ahead of No. 18 Cornell in a close race.

The second varsity four started with a fourth-place finish in 7:55.8 to finish last. They rebounded with a 7:27.4 to finish third, ahead of Michigan, Cornell and Duke. The third-place finish was the tightest of the day for the Sooners, as just 0.5 seconds separated OU and fourth-place UM.

The novice eight recorded a pair of third-place finishes on Lake Hartwell. The crew finished in 7:09.0 in the first race, which featured five teams. In the afternoon session, a 6:54.1 was enough to put the Sooners in the top half of the six-team race. OU downed No. 19 Cornell, Oregon State and Duke.

The final session of the Clemson Invitational, on Sunday morning, will feature Oklahoma against No. 14 Clemson, Louisville, Cornell, Duke and Michigan State. Racing will begin at 7:53 and last until 9:38 a.m. CT.
