NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma head men's gymnastics coach Mark
Williams announced the signing of Viet Thao Hoang
to a National Letter of Intent Wednesday. The Berlin, Germany, native will join the Sooners for the 2014 season.
Hoang, a highly successful gymnast competes for Sportclub Berlin. He
is Williams' first international recruit since he was named head coach in 2000. Hoang currently is a student at Werner-Seelenbinder-Schule in Berlin.
"We are excited about Viet Thao joining our team next season," Williams said. "He meets both the athletic and academic standards of an athlete in our program. This was a special case because he was very instrumental in corresponding with me and expressing a strong desire to be a part of our program. This is the first international student-athlete since I've been head coach, so we're looking forward to the impact he'll have on the team. Along with the five gymnasts we signed in the fall, we feel like we're increasing our talent level for next year's squad."
Allan Bower, Lee Grogan, Alex Powarzynski, Reese Rickett and Colin Van Wicklen will also join the Sooners for the 2014 season and signed a National Letters of Intent last fall. More information about them can be found
