NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma rowing team kept it close in three of its four races but was unable to pull off an upset against No. 9 Stanford Sunday at the Pac 12 Challenge in Redwood City, Calif. Saturday.

OU suffered defeats of less than six seconds in three races, but the ninth-ranked Cardinal were able to pull off victories in all four contests on their 2,000 meter home course at Redwood Shores. The Sooners faced their second top-ten team of the weekend after racing No. 2 California in Saturday's first session of the Challenge. Oklahoma beat Oregon State in three of four races Saturday afternoon.

In addition to Stanford, Cal and Oregon State, the field featured No. 17 Clemson and Northeastern. The three Pac 12 schools each compete once against OU, CU and NU in three sessions over two days.

Oklahoma's varsity eight finished in 6:47.9, behind Stanford's 6:33.3 finish. It was the second-fastest time by an OU opponent on the weekend.

The second varsity eight race was one of three closely-contested races between the Sooners and Cardinal. OU's 6:44.7 was 6.7 seconds behind Stanford's 6:38.0.

The tightest race of the day between Oklahoma and Stanford was in the varsity four, where just 3.7 seconds separated the two crews. However, the Sooners finished second with a time of 7:32.8. After three races this weekend, OU's top four boasts a record of 8-2.

A 4.8-second margin in the novice eight race separated OU and SU, but the Cardinal came away with the victory. It was the second-straight loss for the Sooners' novice crew by less than five seconds.

The Sooners do not compete again until a visit to Clemson, S.C. on April 20-21 for the Clemson Invitational.
