NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma sophomore Axel Alvarez captured the men's singles title at the ITA Central Region Championships in Tulsa Monday.

Alvarez defeated Sooner teammate Dane Webb 6-3, 6-3 in the finals.

“Axel had a great tournament,” OU head coach John Roddick said. “He played the best match of the tournament against Dane in the final.

“It was great to see two OU players in the final. With Guillermo Alcorta's runner-up finish at the All-Americans (Oct. 6), Andrew Harris' win in Mansfield (Oct. 20) and Webb and Alvarez meeting in the finals of the regionals, I think we have had the best fall we have ever had with another opportunity in New York. I'm really proud of our play and effort in the last few weeks.”

Alvarez reached the finals after defeating Drake's Matt Frost 6-3, 6-1.  Webb ousted Drake's Ben Lott 7-5, 6-2 in his semifinal matchup, pitting Sooner teammates against each other for the championship.

Sunday, Harris, a freshman, claimed the International Tennis Federation's USA F27 Futures tournament title in Mansfield, Texas.

OU next travels I-35 to Austin, Texas, to compete in the UT Invitational, starting Friday, Oct. 25.
