OU Greats to Enter Oklahoma Sports HOF

NORMAN, Okla. - Former Sooner wrestling great Wayne Baughman and late OU football standout Jimmy Harris are members of the 2013 induction class for the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame. Lt. Governor Todd Lamb made the official announcement at the Jim Thorpe Museum and Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame.
The 2013 induction class is made up of seven individuals who have contributed to the sports heritage of Oklahoma in a variety of ways. The induction ceremonies will be held on Aug. 5, 2013 at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum.
"This year's class is spectacular," said Eddie Griffin, President of The Jim Thorpe Association. "The achievements of these individuals are unparalleled: Olympic champions, All-Americans and record-setting careers. It's just remarkable. This group truly represents how great the state of Oklahoma is."
Baughman was born and raised in Oklahoma City. He was an NCAA Division I Wrestling Champion and placed second twice, becoming a three-time All-American. He was also a two-time Big 8 Champion. In addition to his collegiate career, Baughman was on three United States Olympic and eight world championship wrestling teams. He coached two Olympic and five world championship teams. He placed fifth and seventh in the Olympics and was a Pan American Games gold medal winner.
Harris posted a 25-0 record as a starting quarterback for the Sooners and was an integral part of the club's historic undefeated winning streak of 47 straight wins under head coach Bud Wilkinson from 1953-57. A two-way player under Wilkinson, Harris made his first start at quarterback as a sophomore during the club's 10-0 season in 1954. He went on to help lead the Sooners to national championships in 1955 and 1956 when OU went 11-0 and 10-0. He enjoyed a four-year career in the NFL as a defensive back with the Philadelphia Eagles, the Los Angeles Rams and the Dallas Cowboys, where he recorded 11 career interceptions. Harris passed away in 2011 at the age of 76 after a battle with lung cancer.
The 2013 class also includes: Chairman of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Clay Bennett; Olympic gold medalist, Nadia Comaneci; Oklahoma City University football standout, LeRoy "Ace" Gutowsky; University of Kansas head basketball coach, Bill Self Jr.; and Oklahoma State two-sport All American, John Henry Ward. Gutowsky, Harris and Ward will be inducted posthumously.
