OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Oklahoma rowing team closed out the Head of the Oklahoma regatta with a dominating performance on the Oklahoma River, winning both events and claiming four medals on Sunday. With a light rain throughout the morning, OU swept the top four spots in the open pair before racing to a first-place finish in the collegiate four on the four-kilometer course.
After placing six of their nine boats in the top ten on
the regatta's first day, the Sooners returned to Oklahoma City to race in two more events. Competing 17 boats in five events on the weekend, Oklahoma came away with six medals, nine top-five finishes and 14 top-10 finishes. The Sooners also claimed a medal in both 500-meter sprint events Saturday night.
"I'm pretty pleased with where we are at this point in the season," head coach Leanne Crain said. "Fall racing is all about training, so we're trying to get them exposed to as much racing as possible. Competing against some good competition this weekend will help them prepare for the rest of the fall and into the championship season in the spring."
Less than 12 hours after the Sooners competed in the sprint racing the night before, they were back on the water competing in the women's open pair event. Racing four boats comprised of members of OU's first varsity eight, the Sooners swept the top four spots, led by Nikki Furmanek and
Rebecca Staff. Furmanek and Staff finished in first with a time of 17:36.520, followed by
Ivy Brown and Kristen Clift with a time of 17:46.519.
Kellie O'Reilly and
Marilyn Kozlowski finished third in 18:13.529, while
Laura Combs and
Emmie Preskitt came in fourth in 18:23.681. OU's four crews led a field of 10 boats in the event.
The final race OU competed in was the women's collegiate four, where the Sooners sent four crews to the line, featuring members of the second and third varsity eights from Saturday's races. Oklahoma finished the final race on top, coming in first with a time of 16:35.807. Following two crews from both Central Oklahoma and Kansas, the Sooners' second boat finished sixth in 16:55.025. Following Kansas in seventh, OU also had boats finish in eighth and ninth in 17:04.163 and 17:07.119, respectively. Sixteen total teams competed in the women's collegiate four event.
After two weekends away from the race course, the Sooners head to Boston's Charles River for the world-famous Head of the Charles Regatta. For live results on Oct. 19-20 from the world's largest two-day rowing event, and continued updates and behind-the-scenes news, follow the Sooners on Twitter at
