CAIRNS, Australia -- Aaryn Ellenberg scored a game-high 17 points and Whitney Hand had a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds as the University of Oklahoma women's basketball team beat the Townsville Flames 84-70 Friday at Bendigo Bank Basketball Centre.
It was the Sooners first game of four they will play on their Australia tour, which runs through August 18.
Nicole Griffin scored 15 points and newcomer Portia Durrett just missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. Point guard Morgan Hook scored just one point from a free throw, but counted nine assists to three turnovers.
Georgia Williams scored 16 points to lead the Queensland Basketball League squad.
The Sooners played under FIBA international rules, which differ in several ways from the U.S. collegiate game. Most notably, the 3-point arc is further and the game plays in four 10-minute quarters rather than two 20-minute halves.
A slow start by both teams ended with a 9-7 Townsville lead at the end of the first quarter. That pace was quickly reversed as Oklahoma made its first four field goals of the second period. OU shared the wealth and seven different Sooners scored in the quarter before Whitney Hand was the first to repeat with a 3-pointer that gave OU an 11-point lead with 4 minutes remaining.
Townsville carved at Oklahoma's lead and trailed at halftime 30-25.
The Sooners extinguished the Flames with a 33-20 third quarter as Ellenberg scored 10 and Durrett contributed eight to the tally.
