OU Rowing to Host Open Tryouts

NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma women's rowing team is looking for OU students interested in rowing for the Sooners. The team will hold an informational meeting for all prospective walk-ons on Monday, Aug. 27 at 6:00 p.m. at Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.
Oklahoma students interested in competing for the University of Oklahoma in the oldest intercollegiate sport in the country should attend the meeting. The meeting will be held in the second level of the East-Side Stadium Club, located within Memorial Stadium near gate 12.
The ideal candidate would be tall and athletic with a desire to compete, or women who feel they can compete with anyone. The coaching staff is interested in students wanting the challenge of competing with the best in the country.
No prior experience is required, and the opportunity to try-out for the Sooner Rowing team is open to all female students. Prospective rowers must be full-time undergraduate students at the University of Oklahoma.
During a four-day tryout in early September, prospective rowers will be taught the basics of rowing. Students will be evaluated on overall athletic ability and a positive attitude during the tryouts. Individuals who show the most potential as a rower will be highly considered for the team. It is typical for as many as 50 first-year rowers to be selected.
"We encourage all students, regardless of experience to learn more about OU rowing at the meeting and tryouts," assistant coach Emma Gresson said. "Not only will you have the unique experience of being a student-athlete at Oklahoma, but you'll have an instant community at OU."
Rowers across the country have gone from being walk-ons with no rowing experience to Big 12 champions, NCAA champions and even Olympic champions. The 2008 Olympic gold medal-winning eight had four women who were walk-ons in college with no rowing experience.
Oklahoma's 2012-13 schedule includes competition in California, South Carolina, Kansas, Texas and Tennessee. OU shares its home course on the scenic Oklahoma River with the United States training center, in Oklahoma City's Boathouse District, one of the world's premier sites for rowing.
