CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The No. 23 Sooners built a 4-1 lead after three innings and held on to a 5-2 win over Appalachian State to advance to the Columbia Super Regional against South Carolina next weekend.

The Sooners (42-23) and Mountaineers (41-18) played their second day of the game. OU easily won the first game, 14-6, behind four RBIs from Matt Oberste and six from Cody Reine.

"I think Appalachian State, with their coach and the job he's doing there, will be back to a lot of NCAA tournaments," said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway.

"There were moments during this season where we were hoping this season would probably hurry up and end. We knew once we defeated Baylor and assured ourselves of a winning record and potentially an NCAA at-large bid, that we were on to something special. We just jumped from a team that was from the outside of the bubble to a team that was a team to be reckoned with."

In the second game, Jack Mayfield drove in three runs to give Drew Harrison plenty of insurance in his first start on the mound. Harrison lasted a career-high six innings and allowed two runs off three hits with four strikeouts. It marked Harrison's first career decision as Steven Okert recorded his fifth save of the season to close the door.

"It was a great feeling to be able to pitch the game that takes us to a Super Regional," said Harrison, who also improved to 1-0 in his career. "I just wanted to throw strikes."

The Sooners' offense stepped up with double-digit hits in the final two games of the regional, including a couple of base knocks by Caleb Bushyhead, who extended his hitting streak to eight games (four multi-hit games in that span).

"We were due," Bushyhead said. "We struggled the whole regional. You can pull out all the stats, and all of them were nothing short of awful. I think today we showed what we're capable of doing, and that's coming out and banging the ball around."

OU will play in its third NCAA Super Regional next weekend in Columbia. The first two games of the series -- Saturday at 7 p.m. (CT) and Sunday at 6 p.m. (CT) -- will be televised nationally on ESPNU. The if necessary third game would be Monday at 6 p.m. (CT) and carried on ESPN2. Radio for all three games of the series will also be available on KREF 1400 AM.

Oklahoma's other two Super Regional appearances came in 2010 against then-No. 1 Virginia, and in 2006 at then-No. 1 Rice. All three of OU's Super Regional appearances have come under head coach Sunny Golloway. The format originated in 1999.
