NORMAN, Okla. -- The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) announced three OU wrestlers – Patrick Graham, Kendric Maple and Jarrod Patterson – to its annual Division I All-Academic team Tuesday for the 2011-12 season. Additionally, OU earned 27th on the All-Academic Team standings with a combined 3.02 GPA.
OU's team ranking was tops among Big 12 schools as Missouri and Oklahoma State landed at No. 29 and 30, respectively. All three of OU's members were NCAA qualifiers, while Maple (141) earned All-America honors.
For teams to be eligible for consideration, the team GPA is comprised of 12 student athletes, including the 10 wrestlers that were the entries in the NCAA tournament conference qualifier. If teams had less than 10 entries for their respective qualifier, they may fill those spots with wrestlers that competed in at least one varsity dual during the season.
The Individual All-Academic Team also has qualifying standards by GPA and season record/accomplishment. To be considered for the award a wrestler must have accumulated a 3.2 cumulative GPA or higher, been an NCAA qualifier or won 60 percent of his total schedule. Also, one can be honored for the All-Academic team with a 3.0 GPA and achieved All-American status this past season.
