NORMAN, Okla. -- No. 24 Oklahoma dropped a 1-0 ballgame on Tuesday night at home to No. 20 TCU despite nine solid innings from Dillon Overton who dropped to 5-3 despite not giving up an earned run off six hits.
The Sooners (33-20) stranded two runners in the eighth and ninth innings as the Horned Frogs (33-16) completed the two-game season sweep. TCU also one by a run, 4-3, back on May 1 in Fort Worth.
The Horned Frogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first after a two-base error on Cody Reine in right field was followed by a double by Jason Coats.
That was all TCU starter Brandon Finnegan needed on the evening as he took a no-hitter into the eighth inning. Four Sooners did reach base, three off TCU errors and another on a hit batter, before Finnegan gave up a bunt single to Caleb Bushyhead, who beat the play down the line, in the eighth.
The bunt single by Bushyhead gave the Sooners runners at first and second with zero outs after Evan Mistich led off the frame by reaching on an error by Finnegan.
That ended the night for Finnegan but reliever Justin Scharf got out of the jam in the eighth after a failed sacrifice bunt by pinch hitter Chase Simpson, a strikeout by Tanner Toal and an inning-ending fly out by Erik Ross.
Overton recorded his fifth strikeout of the night, against zero walks, in the ninth to keep TCU at bay and OU within one run.
In the home half of the ninth, the Sooners again threatened with Cody Reine leading off the frame with a hit-by-pitch by Scharf. A base hit through the right side of the infield by Max White looked like OU would have runners on the corners with zero outs, but a nice relay by shortstop Keaton Jones from right field eliminated Reine at third base. A fielder's choice by Matt Oberste in the next at-bat took White off the base paths for the second out, but Jack Mayfield followed with a two-out infield single.
The hit by Mayfield prompted another pitching change as Kevin Allen came in to retire Evan Mistich on a called-third strike to end the game.
It marked the fifth save of the season for Allen who helped Finnegan improve to 3-3 after his seven shutout innings. Finnegan gave up one hit and zero walks to go along with his seven strikeouts.
OU closes the regular season with a three-game series with Samford on Thursday (6:30 p.m.), Friday (6:30 p.m.) and Saturday (2 p.m.). The Bulldogs won 12-7 at home on Tuesday against No. 2 Florida to improve to 34-19.
