NORMAN, Okla. - The 31st-ranked University of Oklahoma men's golf team finished the 17-team ASU Thunderbird Invitational in eighth place Saturday with a 1-under-par 283 in the final round in Tempe, Ariz.
The Sooners started the day in ninth place but moved up one spot thanks to the tournament's fourth lowest round of the day at the 40th-annual event. OU finished with a three-round 865 (+13), 30 shots behind champion and sixth-ranked California. The Golden Bears finished eight strokes ahead of runners up San Diego State and New Mexico at the par-71, 7,026-yard Karsten Golf Course.
“We played a pretty solid round today, and I am pleased with today's performance,” OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. “It's always nice to finish a tournament on a good note, and we accomplished our goal today of playing a good team round.”
Abraham Ancer was the Sooners' top performer in Arizona, recording a relatively clean 1-under 70 on Saturday. His final round included three birdies and just two bogeys. The junior finished the event in a tie for 13th place with a three-round 210 (-3), six strokes behind medalist Derek Ernst of UNLV.
Oklahoma's Riley Pumphrey had a more interesting round at Karsten. After recording birdies on holes No. 2 and 3, Pumphrey bogeyed holes 5, 6, 7 and 8. The Sooners' lone competing senior recovered by playing the back nine at 1 under par to finish the round at even par. Pumphrey's steady 54-hole 213 (he shot even par in all three rounds) put him in a tie for 20th place in the 95-man field.
OU freshman Michael Gellerman carded a final-round 72 (+1) and finished the event in a tie for 36th place with a three-round 220 (+7). The freshman recorded two birdies and three bogeys on the day.
After struggling in the first two rounds, Will Kropp turned in a final-round 70 (-1). The OU junior carded a double bogey on the fifth hole, but managed five birdies and two bogeys on the other 17 holes. He moved up 16 spots to finish the event in a tie for 48th place at 9 over.
Sophomore Eduardo Castiello recorded a final-round 79 (+8). He was disqualified in Friday's first round.
The Sooners will be back in action April 21-22 when they travel to Bryan, Texas, for The Aggie Invitational. It will mark the team's final event before competing at the Big 12 Championship in Trinity, Texas, April 27-29.
