NORMAN, Okla. - The 31st-ranked University of Oklahoma's men's golf team is in ninth place after 36 holes of the 17-team ASU Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. The Sooners fired a two-round 582 (+14) Friday at the par-71, 7,026-yard Karsten Golf Course.
No. 13 San Diego State carded a Friday-low 557 (-11) and holds a four-shot lead over No. 6 California. The Aztecs were led by Alex Kang, whose two-round 133 (-9) tied Arizona State's Austin Quick atop the player leaderboard.
Abraham Ancer opened the event with his sixth sub-70 round this season. The junior fired a first-round 68 (-3), recording three bogeys, four birdies and an eagle on the par-5 10th hole. Ancer finished with four bogeys and two birdies in the second round to end the day at 2 under par. His two-round 140 (-2) has him in a tie for 12th place.
Riley Pumphrey had a rough start at the 40th-annual event before recovering nicely. The Sooner senior started the first round on the 12th hole and was 3 over par through his first seven holes before notching four birdies over an eight-hole stretch to finish at even par. Pumphrey registered three birdies and three bogeys in the second round to stay even on the day. His two-round 142 places him in seven-way tie for 17th place among the 94 competitors.
Michael Gellerman carded a 6-over 77 in first round and bogeyed three of his first five holes of the second round. The freshman was stellar the rest of the day, recording three birdies and no bogeys on his final 13 holes. Gellerman is tied for 39th place at 148 (+6).
Will Kropp and Eduardo Castiello rounded out the Sooner's lineup. Kropp finished the day in a tie for 64th place at 10 over. Castiello was disqualified in the first round, but shot seven over in the second.
"Something good needs to happen tomorrow," OU head coach Ryan Hybl said, "not as individuals, but collectively as a team."
The final round of the ASU Thunderbird Invitational will begin Sunday at 9 a.m. CT. Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com.
