CONWAY, Ark. -- No. 5 Oklahoma broke away from Big 12 competition Saturday as it traveled to Conway, Ark., for a one-game match up with Central Arkansas, run ruling the Bears, 8-0, in six innings. With the win the Sooners improved to 40-7 while Central Arkansas dropped to 35-19.
The game was OU's final non-conference game of the regular season as OU finished its non-conference slate 26-3. The win was OU's 11th run rule victory of the season.
The Sooners were paced at the plate by Jessica Shults who hit her 13th home run of the season and her eighth double of the year for a team high two hits and two RBIs. OU finished with six total hits and no errors to the Bears' one hit and two errors.
Keilani Ricketts got the start in the circle for the Sooners and responded with her 17th game this season with at least 10 strikeouts to move to 25-6 on the year. Ricketts finished the game by allowing just one hit, her sixth one-hit ball game of the year, and striking out 13 while not allowing a walk. Kelsie Armstrong took the loss for UCA to fall to 22-12.
The Sooners were held without a hit until the fourth inning when Shults sent a two-run home run over the right field fence at Farris Field. Ricketts, batting before Shults, became the first batter of the game to reach first on a walk before Shults sent a 1-2 pitch out for her 13th home run this season. The blast was Shults' 47th career home run which moved her into a tie for fourth on the Big 12 career home runs list.
OU scored for the second consecutive inning in fifth inning when it added three runs off two hits and one UCA error. Brianna Turang led off with a single to short before picking up her eighth stolen base this season. Erica Sampson sent Turang home with a deep single down the left field line before advancing to second on the throw home.
In the next at bat, Destinee Martinez laid down a bunt towards third that she reached first on due to a throwing error from UCA third baseman Melissa Bryant. Martinez then advanced to second while Sampson sauntered home. After Martinez stole third, her 14th steal this season, freshman Lauren Chamberlain sent a sacrifice fly to right field to score Martinez and extend OU's lead to five.
Oklahoma added its final three runs in the sixth when Shults doubled to right to lead off the inning before Georgia Casey walked and Callie Parsons replaced Shults on the base path. After back-to-back fly outs to left, Sampson reached base on another throwing error from Bryant that also sent Parsons home. Allee Allen was inserted into the lineup and promptly hit her third double of the season into left center to score Casey and Sampson and boost the OU lead to eight.
The Sooners return to action next Friday at 7 p.m. when they host No. 8 Texas in a three-game Big 12 series.
