LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Jordan John tossed his third complete game of the year and No. 23 Oklahoma recorded a 4-1 series-opening win at Kansas on Friday night.

The Sooners took a 2-0 lead in the first inning before a weather delay that lasted one hour and 39 minutes halted the action after three innings. Despite the long delay, John came back out and recorded seven of his eight strikeouts in the final six innings to improve to 8-4 on the year.

"I was able to come out and give my team nine solid innings and get the win on Friday," said John.

The lefty did not issue a walk in the game and before KU plated its only run in the seventh inning after a triple by Zach Elgie, he held a scoreless streak of 19 2/3 consecutive innings. John did record his second straight complete game and tossed a career-high 132 pitches.

"I come out every day with the focus of putting up a zero every inning," said John. "I was just trying to get the team back on the winning track and I was able to do that."

“Jordan just pitched his tail off,” said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. “He did a great job for us. It was about Jordan John (tonight).”

OU has won nine straight games in the series with Kansas and improved to 27-16 overall and 8-8 in Big 12 play. The Jayhawks managed just five hits and dropped to 17-26 on the season and 4-12 in league play.

Erik Ross led off the game with a walk by KU starter Frank Duncan and moved to second on Jack Mayfield's single through the right side. That led Caleb Bushyhead to move both runners up into scoring position with the sacrifice bunt. The Sooners' first run came as Ross scored on a passed ball and then Max White followed with a RBI double down the right-field line to bring home Mayfield.

White brought home Mayfield in the sixth inning as the duo had back-to-back singles and then Cody Reine gave the Sooners a 4-0 lead off a double down the right-field line.

White has six straight multi-hit games with 14 hits and eight RBI in that span.

"He's matured so much in the last month," added Golloway. "I am really happy with the way he goes to the plate and his teammates have a lot of confidence in him."

Kansas starter Frank Duncan (4-6), the reigning Big 12 Pitcher of the Week, came back after the delay and lasted seven innings with seven strikeouts, but gave up four earned runs off six hits and two walks.

Game two in the series is slated for 6 p.m. at Hoglund Ballpark on Saturday. OU's Jonathan Gray (3-4, 4.72 ERA) is scheduled to start opposite KU left hander Wes Benjamin (2-5, 4.28 ERA).
