NORMAN, Okla. - The 28th-ranked University of Oklahoma men's golf team is in third place after Saturday's first and second rounds of the 10-team Aggie Invitational. The Sooners followed a first-round 384 with a second-round event-low 376 and stand at 40 over par at the 7,146-yard, par-72 Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas.
Oklahoma trails first-place and 13th-ranked Oregon by nine strokes and 15th-ranked and host Texas A&M by two shots. No. 1 Texas, No. 30 Oklahoma State and No. 29 Baylor round out the top six. No. 43 Texas Tech finished the day in ninth place.
Texas Tech and Utah ran out of daylight and were unable to complete the second round. Both teams will complete their remaining holes at 7:30 a.m. CT Sunday.
Oregon's Daniel Miernicki (-1) sits in first place among individuals as the only golfer under par. Two others are at even par, including OU freshman Charlie Saxon.
Despite OU's third-place standing, head coach Ryan Hybl said the day was a struggle.
"The golf course won, and as a team we gave up a lot of shots," said the third-year OU mentor.
The Sooners got a surprising performance out of Saxon, their No. 6 golfer. The freshman, playing in only his fourth team event of his collegiate career, led OU with a 1-over 73 in the first round. Saxon bogeyed holes No. 3 and 6 in the second round, but birdied four straight on the back nine to quickly climb the leaderboard. He recorded a double bogey on No. 17 but recovered with a birdie on No 18 to finish the day in a tie for second place with a two-round 144 (E).
"Charlie Saxon grew up today," Hybl said. "It was nice to see someone in the back of the lineup step up."
Riley Pumphrey recorded a strong outing as well, shooting rounds of 75 and 76. The senior recorded just three birdies over 36 holes, but is in good shape entering Sunday's final round. Pumphrey's two-round 151 (+7) places him in a tie for 12th place in the 70-man field.
Abraham Ancer had a rough start to the event, recording a double bogey on No. 3 and a triple bogey on No. 8 in the opening round. In the second round, Ancer carded four birdies and seven bogeys. He finished the day in a tie for 22nd place at 10 over par.
Junior Will Kropp is tied for 35th place at 13 over par.
Freshman Michael Gellerman and sophomore Michael Schoolcraft finished the day in a tie for 41st place with a two-round 158 (+14).
Freshman Nicholas Smits, competing as an individual, finished the day in a tie for 57th place at +19.
The Sooners will look to close Sunday with a statement and enter the upcoming Big 12 Championship with some momentum.
"We are in the mix for tomorrow, and I know the guys will be ready to go," Hybl said.
Oklahoma will tee off for the final round Sunday at 8:54 a.m. CT. Live scoring for sixth-annual the Aggie Invitational, which features a six-count-five scoring system, will be available at Golfstat.com.
