COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- With projected rain in the College Station area pushing Sunday's game to the second part of a Saturday doubleheader, No. 6 Oklahoma claimed its fifth Big 12 series with a 5-2 win over No. 14 Texas A&M in the twin bill's first game. The win expanded OU's Big 12 lead as it moved to 35-5 on the year and 11-2 in the Big 12 while Texas A&M fell to 28-13 and 8-5 in the Big 12. The Sooners opened the weekend with a 6-1 win over A&M on Friday night.
For the 12th time this season, and the second consecutive game, an Oklahoma batter had two home runs in the same game as Keilani Ricketts sent a three-run shot out in the first inning and a solo shot in the fifth inning. Oklahoma moved to 31-0 on the year when scoring first behind Ricketts' first home run which was one of 10 hits for OU, its 10th game with at least 10 hits. The Sooners are 10-0 in those games and 32-2 when collecting at least seven hits.
Michelle Gascoigne got the start in the circle in game one and moved to 14-1 on the year. Gascoigne struck out five Texas A&M batters while allowing just five hits, two runs and walking two batters.
OU wasted no time in jumping out to a quick lead in the day's first game as all three players in the final 25 for the 2012 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award picked up hits. The only freshman up for the national award, Lauren Chamberlain, got things started off with a one-out ground ball single through the left side of the Aggie defense before Jessica Shults laced a double down the right field line. One at bat later, Keilani Ricketts became the third Sooner with at least 10 home runs on the year by skipping her 10th home run off the top of the left field fence at the Aggie Softball Complex.
The Sooners got a fourth run in the top of the third after Shults reached on a fielder's choice before advancing to second on a wild pitch. After Ricketts walked to put two on, Brittany WIlliams dropped a single into left field that sent Shults around the corner for OU's fourth run.
Following the lead of Shults on Friday night, Ricketts blasted a second home run in the same game as she sent a 2-2 pitch over the right field fence for a 5-0 Oklahoma lead in the top of the fifth. The solo shot was the junior's 11th of the year.
Texas A&M got on the board in the bottom of the seventh as Brittany Walker reached first on a fielder's choice before Lindsey Sisk hit just the third home run of the season off Gascoigne.
Oklahoma returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts North Texas at 6 p.m. before hosting No. 9 Missouri in a three-game series beginning Friday at 7 p.m.
