NORMAN, Okla. -- The last beam was set in place, the flag planted and the broom visible. All that's left is the details. OU held a "Topping Off" ceremony Thursday for its new, state-of-the-art student housing center, Headington Hall -- a $75 million project.

"It's gone from drawings, to renderings, to a topping off ceremony," athletics director Joe Castiglione said.

The structure, on the southeast corner of Jenkins Ave., and Lindsey Ave. in Norman will be open for students in the fall of 2013, but Thursday's ceremony, along with a lunch for the dozens of workers, engineers and coaches, was met with smiles on a windy afternoon.

The last beam settled at the top of the structure while the broom was symbolic of growth and good luck.

Next up: the completion of a 220,000 square foot, five-story housing facility which will be home to more than 380 residents.

Headington Hall began in earnest in 2007 with a fundraising campaign. In 2009 the structure was conceived and in September of 2011 construction began. All told, $35 million in private finds will be raised for the project.

"Because of the skill we've had, we can get this done in a first-class manner," Castiglione said. "Topping off is what we try to do with our jobs so they (student-athletes) can shoot for the top."
