ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Jonathan Gray recorded his first victory of 2012 and Jordan John posted his first career save as the No. 16 OU baseball team posted a 4-0 shutout victory on Sunday over New Mexico to complete the three-game sweep.
“I thought our guys played well and we are pleased with the weekend (sweep). I really thought we threw the ball well,” said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. “I was really proud of the way Jon Gray came back and pitched.”
OU struck first in the third straight game as Hunter Lockwood drove in his 12th run of the season on an infield single. Later in the frame, Evan Mistich connected on his first home run of the season and third of his career.
The Sooners padded their 2-0 lead in the second inning on a RBI single by Max White, his fifth hit and fifth RBI of the series.
Gray took advantage of the three-run cushion and tied a career high with five innings pitched with just four hits allowed and two strikeouts. Gray, along with John, OU recorded its first shutout since March 18, 2011 against Texas A&M in Norman.
On Friday night, John recorded his third win of the season with 1 1/3 shutout innings and came back on Sunday to throw four innings with one hit and zero runs allowed for his first career save.
“Jordan John was typical Jordan John and we don't take that for granted,” added Golloway. “He is throwing the baseball extremely well right now.”
The OU offense pounded out 12 hits on the afternoon, led by Erik Ross and Garret Carey who each collected three base hits. The Sooners finished the series with 39 hits, including home runs from Cody Reine and Mistich.
Ross gave OU an insurance run in the ninth inning on a perfectly placed bunt. The sacrifice brought home pinch runner Dylan Raper from third.
“I am more than happy with our performance today,” said Ross. “It feels good because there are a lot of young guys in the dugout that need to see us (veterans) perform and once they see that, they know they can do the same.”
The win improved the Sooners to 7-3 on the season and it marked the eighth straight win in the series with New Mexico, which dropped to 2-8. OU leads the all-time series 15-1 with the last series loss coming in 1988.
The Sooners return home to host a two-game midweek set with Arkansas Pine Bluff (March 6-7) before flying to Oregon for the Nike College Showcase. In Eugene, OU will play Connecticut (March 9) and a day/night doubleheader against West Virginia and Oregon (March 10). On Sunday, March 11, OU plays at Oregon State in Corvallis.
“It's going to be tough and we can't overlook Pine Bluff at home, we have to play well at home,” said Golloway. “There is going to be some real good competition at the Nike Showcase. The focus has been about getting better everyday, and I think we are doing that right now.”
