NORMAN, Okla. -- The 28th-ranked University of Oklahoma's men's golf team is in sixth place after 36 holes of the 12-team Linger Longer Invitational in Eatonton, Ga. The Sooners shot a two-round 584 (+8) Saturday at the par-72, 7,073-yard Great Waters Course at Reynolds Plantation.
No. 2 Alabama carded a 564 (-12) and holds a five-shot lead over Georgia. Individually, James Beale of Mercer, Jeff Karlsson of Kennesaw State and Max Scodro of Notre Dame are in a three-way tie for first place at 5 under par.
"Overall, it was a tough day for us," OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. "We couldn't get any momentum all day, and the scores reflect that."
Riley Pumphrey leads Oklahoma after two rounds with a 3-under-par 141. The senior fired a first-round 72 (E), recording two birdies and two bogeys. Pumphrey was impressive in the second round, overcoming three bogeys with six birdies (on holes No. 1, 2, 6, 12, 13 and 18). He is in a tie for seventh place, just two shots out of the lead.
The Sooners also got a solid performance out of Michael Gellerman. The true freshman finished the first 18 holes at even par, carding five birdies to make up for two double bogeys and a bogey. Gellerman followed with a second-round 74 (+2) and is tied for 22nd place at 146 (+2).
Abraham Ancer registered three bogeys and a double bogey in the first round, but also recorded birdies on holes No. 1, 2, 6 and 18 to finish the round at 1 over par. His second-round 74 (+2) has him in a tie for 24th place at 147 (+3).
"Riley played solid all day," Hybl said, "and Abe is hitting the ball great."
Other than a triple bogey and two bogeys, Will Kropp had a relatively clean first round. The senior carded a single birdie but shot par on 12 holes, including each on the back nine. Kropp fired a 3-over 75 in the second round to finish the day with a 151 (+7), good for a 45th-place tie.
Sophomore Eduardo Castiello is tied for 53rd place after finishing the day at 9 over (151).
Competing as an individual, senior Ben Klaus is tied for 57th place at 12 over par.
"We need a great round tomorrow," Hybl said.
The final round of the Linger Longer Invitational will begin Sunday morning. Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com.
