LUBBOCK, Texas -- Dillon Overton tossed his second complete game in three weeks and Oklahoma tied up the Big 12 series with Texas Tech after a 5-3 victory in game two on Saturday.
Overton improved to 4-0 with five strikeouts and zero walks while Jack Mayfield paced the offense with three hits, a run and an RBI.
“I thought our guys fought hard today and I was proud of the effort,” said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. “Dillon was just Dillon today. He's a special guy. You don't get freshman All-America honors for nothing and he has backed that up so far this year.”
The Sooners recorded their first conference victory of 2012 and improved to 14-10 overall (1-4 Big 12). Texas Tech's 10-game winning streak at home was snapped as it fell to 15-9 and 1-4.
In the first inning, OU plated two runs for the early advantage, which started with Caleb Bushyhead walking to lead off the game off John Neely. Bushyhead then scored the game's first run on Jack Mayfield's double down the left field line and Max White plated the second run on a sacrifice fly.
Tech's Barrett Barnes cut the OU lead in half in home half of the first with a solo homer, but Dylan Neal's RBI single put OU back on top by two in the next frame.
The Sooners regained a two-run advantage in the fifth inning off a fielder's choice by Cody Reine and OU received extra insurance in the ninth off a two-out rally that plated the fifth and final run. Garrett Carey started that rally with a single and Neal and Brian Brightwell both followed with singles of their own. Brightwell collected two base knocks in his first start of the season and was joined by Neal with a 2-for-4 outing.
“Dylan Neal has done a good job and I was really proud of Brian Brightwell,” added Golloway. “We have some freshmen that are really battling out there. There were a lot of positives today.”
With the offense behind him, Overton was efficient thru the middle and late frames, retiring Texas Tech in order in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings. His opposition, Neely, lasted seven innings in his second loss of the season.
The Sooners and Red Raiders conclude the series at 1 p.m. in Lubbock. OU's Jonathan Gray is scheduled to start opposite Tech's Trey Masek. The game can be heard on the Sooner Sports Network KREF 1400 AM with Toby Rowland calling the action with Craig Moran.
"Tomorrow's game is important for both sides," said Golloway. "Nobody wants to start the year losing their first two series."
