NORMAN, Okla. - The 35th-ranked University of Oklahoma men's golf team fell three spots to sixth place after Monday's second round of the Puerto Rico Classic. The Sooners shot a second-round 294 (+6) at the par-72, 6,902-yard Rio Mar Country Club in San Juan, P.R.
No. 8 Alabama separated itself from the 15-team field. At 21 under par, the Crimson Tide hold a 13-stroke lead over the field. The host team, No. 40 Purdue, is in second at -8, and No. 13 Clemson, Virginia Tech and No. 26 Georgia round out the top 5. Big 12 rivals Oklahoma State (ranked No. 24) and Texas (ranked No. 1) are in seventh and ninth place.
"Today we looked uncomfortable at times with not as much commitment to the job at hand," OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. "We did a really poor job today, but we still have a great opportunity to beat some of the best teams in the country tomorrow."
OU senior Riley Pumphrey and junior Will Kropp continue to lead the team. The duo each a shot second-round 73 (+1) and are tied for 14th place. Pumphrey struggled on the front nine, recording two bogeys, a double bogey and a single birdie, but finished the round strong with two birdies on a clean back nine. Kropp hit four bogeys in the second round, but also added three birdies. Pumphrey and Kropp trail Georgia Tech's James White (-8) by seven strokes.
Abraham Ancer had the best day of his teammates, breaking even again in the second round. Ancer hit three bogeys, but birdied holes No. 5, 6 and 9. The junior enters the final round in a tie for 21st among 74 competitors.
Freshman Michael Gellerman struggled with bogeys again in the second round, finishing the round at -4. Gellerman fell 16 spots and is in a tie for 37th place.
Ben Klaus shot a second-round 79 (+6) and is tied for 69th place. The senior's second round included six bogeys, a double bogey and two birdies.
"It's time for us to step up," Hybl said. "We are really close as a team to posting a really good number, and it all needs to come together tomorrow."
The final round of the Puerto Rico Classic will begin Tuesday morning. Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com.
