NORMAN, Okla.-- The No. 35 University of Oklahoma men's golf team shot a final-round 290 (+6) Tuesday and finished in second place at the 15-team UTSA/Oak Hills Invitational at the par-71, Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio, Texas.

The Sooners entered the day with a four-stroke lead but could not hold off a surge by Texas Tech, which claimed its fourth consecutive UTSA/Oak Hills Invitational title by shooting a final-round 282 for a three-stroke victory. Oklahoma finished the tournament with a three-round 862 (+10).

"Tough learning experience for us today,” OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. “We lost the tournament today in a lot of different areas. I expect our boys to rebound from this experience. In athletics, you win and you lose. Today we lost. Unfortunately, it was our own undoing for the most part, and that is the hardest thing to deal with."

Will Kropp had a team-best performance on the day, recording six birdies and just two bogeys to finish with a 4-under-par 67. The junior's final round launched him 25 spots into a tie for 12th place with a three-round 216 (+3).

Riley Pumphrey shot a third-round 74 (+3), uncharacteristically carding five bogeys and just two birdies on the day. The senior finished the event with a three-round 215 (+2) and in a tie for eighth place in the 82-man field.

Abraham Ancer, who led the tournament after two rounds, failed to find his rhythm in the third. Ancer shot an 8-over-par 79 in the final round, including three double-bogeys on the back nine. The junior fell 15 spots to a tie for 16th place with a three-round 218 (+5).

Eduardo Castiello also turned in an 8-over-par performance in the third round while Michael Schoolcraft fired a 1-under 70. The sophomores each finished the event in a tie for 42nd place with a three-round 223 (+10).

Competing as an individual, freshman Nicholas Smits completed his first event as a Sooner with a three-round 237 (+24) and in a tie for 76th place.

The Sooners will be back in action Feb. 19-21 when they travel to San Juan, P.R., for the Puerto Rico Classic.
