It's the most wonderful time of the year ... unless you work in Compliance! Football is completing another successful season, which draws agents and their associates hoping to persuade athletes that their services are far superior to all others. Bowl games are around the corner. The better the bowl - the bigger the potential issues become.
And, the wonderful holiday season of giving is upon us. But giving to student-athletes may result in a visit to our campus from the NCAA. Even though you may be in the holiday spirit, the NCAA does not grant exception to the extra benefits rule because it's Christmas. Regardless of the reason or the season, providing a gift, meal, snack or transportation to a student-athlete is a violation. Below are some guidelines that stemmed from violations committed by other institutions.
Student-athletes:
May not attend your holiday party
May not be given a Christmas present
May not be given holiday treats (team or individual student-athlete)
May not be given a Christmas card
May not stay in your home during the vacation period
May not be provided holiday meals from a restaurant
NCAA Bylaw 16.02.3 - An extra benefit is any special arrangement by an institutional employee or a representative of the institution's athletics interests to provide a student-athlete or the student-athlete's relative or friend a benefit not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation.
As always, your cooperation and understanding is essential to the success of our programs.
