No. 25 OU Begins with Back-to-Back Wins

NORMAN, Okla. – The No. 25 University of Oklahoma women's tennis team won back-to-back matches to start the 2012 season Saturday, defeating Drake, 6-1, and shutting out Arkansas-Little Rock, 7-0, at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

Oklahoma (2-0) won all six doubles matches Saturday and took 10 of its 11 singles victories in straight-sets. The Sooners' only loss on the day was at the No. 2 singles position against Drake.

“Today was exactly what we needed to get the year started,” OU head coach David Mullins said. “We got the nerves out of our systems and were able to work on a few things in the process.”

The Sooners opened the day with Drake and easily swept all three doubles matches to take the 1-0 lead.

Senior Marie-Pier Huet and sophomore Whitney Ritchie, currently ranked No. 22 nationally in doubles, clinched the doubles point for OU after defeating Drake's Gabriela Demos and Manca Krizman at the No. 1 position, 8-4.

OU quickly won three singles points to secure the victory over the Bulldogs. Sophomore Mia Lancaster won OU's fourth dual point to clinch the win by beating Drake's Demos at the No. 3 spot, 6-2, 6-1.

The Sooners' ended the day with a shutout against UALR, 7-0. OU once again swept doubles and won all six singles matches in straight-sets.

Mia Lancaster and freshman Abbi Melrose clinched the doubles point against the Trojans with an 8-1 win over UALR's Viktoriya Plyuta and Yana Kakovkina at the No. 3 spot. The Sooner duo gave up just three games combined during both doubles matches Saturday.

Sophomore transfer Whitney Wofford secured the victory of UALR for OU. Wofford claimed OU's fourth duala point by defeating Alina Kolegova, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 5 position.

The Sooners continue their spring season with another home match on Tuesday, Jan. 24 at 1 p.m. against North Texas at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
