NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma men's golf team shot a second-round 279 (-5) Saturday to take over first place at the 14-team Mason Rudolph Championship at the 7,100-yard, par-71 Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn. OU leads Middle Tennessee State and Mississippi by one stroke.
The Sooners got off to a slow start Saturday but finished strong on the back nine to take control of the top spot with 18 holes left to play Sunday.
Despite a disappointing first round Friday, Abraham Ancer returned to old form Saturday. The junior shot par or better on all 18 holes, recording birdies on holes 11, 14 and 16 for a 3-under-par 68. Ancer climbed 21 spots into a tie for sixth place at -1, four strokes behind the leaders.
After shooting a first-round 73 (+2), Riley Pumphrey turned in a solid performance on the second day. The junior shot a second-round 69 (-2) and climbed 17 into a share of 10th place in his first tournament of the year.
"Our two upperclassmen did a nice job of getting under par," said third-year OU head coach Ryan Hybl of Ancer and Pumphrey. "I expect them to lead us again tomorrow."
Michael Gellerman continued to impress in his freshman season. Gellerman fired a 1-under-par 70 in the second round, with birdies on holes 3, 14 and 18. The freshman joined Ancer in a tie for sixth place going into the final round.
"Gellerman is so close to having a great round," said Hybl. "Hopefully it will come tomorrow."
Michael Schoolcraft sat at +4 through 10 holes Saturday but bounced back to card five birdies on his final eight holes to finish the day at 1 over par. The sophomore remains in a tie for 20th place.
Freshman Charlie Saxon entered the day in the lead after a 2-under-par opening round but shot a second-round 76 (+5) to fall into a tie for 27th place with 18 holes remaining.
"We did a nice job today getting after the easy holes and it showed coming down the stretch," said Hybl. "We are in a great position to compete tomorrow for a championship."
Teams will play the final 18 holes Sunday with fixed tee times on holes 1 and 10 starting at 7:30 a.m. CT. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.
