NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma men's golf team finished the first 18 holes of the 14-team Mason Rudolph Championship on Friday tied for second place at the 7,100-yard, par-71 Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn. OU and Middle Tennessee State trail Georgia Southern by just one stroke at the 11th annual event.
In their second collegiate event, freshmen Charlie Saxon and Michael Gellerman turned in team-low scores in the first round. All three of the Sooners' participating underclassmen (Saxon, Gellerman and sophomore Michael Schoolcraft) finished the day in the top 25 of the 78-man-field.
"Both of our freshmen did a nice job today, and it was great to get an under-par round out of Charlie Saxon today." said third year head coach Ryan Hybl. "He looked really good with his putter."
Saxon rebounded from a 12-over-par collegiate debut at last week's Mark Simpson Colorado Invite by shooting a 2-under 69 in the first round of the Mason Rudolph. The Tulsa, Okla., product birdied six holes on the day and is in a four-way tie for first place.
After an even-par performance and an 11th-place finish last week, Gellerman continued to play an important role for the Sooners Friday in Tennessee. From Sterling, Kan., Gellerman recorded two bogeys on the front nine, but birdied holes 12 and 15 to finish even on the day. His first-round 71 put the freshman in a tie for 11th place.
Schoolcraft, who competed as an individual in the season opener, shot a first-round 71 (+1) Friday. After registering a bogey and a double bogey on the front nine, Schoolcraft recovered to birdie holes 11, 14 and 16. He is tied for 21st place.
Playing in OU's No. 1 position, Abraham Ancer struggled early with three bogeys on the front nine. The junior regrouped to par holes 10 through 17 before notching a birdie on the 18th hole. Ancer's 2-over-par first round has him tied for 27th place. The Sooners' top returning player from the 2010-11 campaign finished in the top 25 in 11 of 13 events last season.
In his first tournament of the year, Riley Pumphrey finished with 16 pars and two bogeys for a first-round 73 (+2). The senior is also tied for 27th place.
"We have to go dominate the par 5s tomorrow, something we haven't done a good job with this year," said Hybl. "I do have a good feeling about having Abe [Abraham Ancer] and [Riley] Pumphrey going out in our four and five slots."
