Sooners Finish Day One at Sooner Invite

NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma women's tennis team opened the 2011 fall tournament season Friday with first round action at the Sooner Fall Invitational in Norman.

The Sooners went a combined 7-4 on day one, including a 5-1 showing in singles play.

OU duo, senior Marie-Pier Huet and freshman Nicole Long, started the day by winning two doubles matches to advance to the Doubles A Championship.

Huet and Long defeated Henry and Kalodzitsa of Armstrong Atlantic in the first round, 8-0, before topping Blaskova and Kavalova of Wichita State in the second round, 8-6.

The Sooner pair will face Armstrong Atlantic's Krtickova and Filipovski in the Doubles A title match.

Huet and Long both won in the first round of singles following doubles play. Huet defeated Bonny Davidson of TU, 6-2, 6-0, while Long defeated Liucija Smaizyte of UTA, 6-2, 6-4.

Sophomores Whitney Ritchie and Whitney Wofford recovered from a loss in doubles by winning both of their singles matches. Ritchie topped UTA's Christine Foote, 6-2, 6-0, while Wofford rallied to beat Hannah Kelley of Abilene Christian, 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (8).

Mia Lancaster also picked up a win in singles after defeating UNT's Valentina Starkova in the first round, 6-2, 7-5, 1-0 (6).

Mia and Peta Maree Lancaster lost two doubles matches Friday in the sisters' first tournament as a doubles pair. Peta Maree also lost in singles to ACU's Madelyn Walker, 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (8).

The 2011 Sooner Fall Invitational continues Saturday at 9 a.m., with singles at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

Admission to all OU women's tennis home events is free.
