Your Story: Sooners Head to Tallahassee
September 15, 2011 | Athletics
NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma fans are renowned for supporting their Sooners no matter the distance from Norman. Saturday night's showdown in Tallahassee is no exception. Roughly a thousand miles separate Owen Field from Doak Campbell Stadium but expect to see thousands of Sooner fans in the stands at kickoff.Oklahoma's athletics ticket office served approximately 7,000 fans through the OU box office while countless others will secure tickets from other sources. As with other prominent road games against teams with colors similar to OU, fans are urged to wear white to stand out from the home crowd and align themselves with the road jerseys the team will wear on the field.
Earlier this week, we asked fans headed to Tallahassee to share their experiences on SoonerSports.com. Email us updates and photos of your trip to SoonerSportscom@gmail.com or use our Twitter handle @SoonerSportscom. We'll watch for your posts. This is your story:

"We've been on the beach in Destin since Monday counting down the days. We've seen quite a few Sooners & have encountered a little bit of FSU trash talk. We love proudly wearing our OU gear in enemy territory! Great trip! Less than 28 hours to kickoff!!!"

"I've been a Sooner fan since I first watched OU football when I moved to Oklahoma back in 2000. Loved them ever since, and always will. Love them so much, even made my car a rolling Oklahoma Shrine. Me and my girlfriend will be watching the game rooting for the Sooners in Tampa at LeeRoy Selmon's resturant. Now that I'm living in Florida, thought it'd be great to represent the crimson and cream! BOOMER SOONER!"

"Me and 4 other OU students will be heading to Tallahassee this weekend for the game. Were driving to Arlington tonight to fly into Florida tomorrow. We packed very light only taking a white shirt for gameday and some homework to do on the plane. Should be a great weekend watching the number 1 team in the nation on the road for the first time. We can't wait to get there and we will be tweeting about our trip all weekend!"

"I'm a Sooner-born and Sooner-bred fanatic. I'm also in the USAF so I rarely get to go to games. I was recently stationed in Florida after spending a year in Korea. The first thing I did when I found out I was headed here was figure out how to get tickets to the game! It is my first regular season game since I left Oklahoma ten years ago and I can't wait. We have only a three-hour drive tomorrow but the anticipation is tearing me a part! I plan on being there for College GameDay and then tailgaiting!"- Kassandra

"Born and raised in Oklahoma, but haven't lived there in over 20 years (Coast Guard officer career). Went to OU. Son is flying from Virginia to Pensacola where I will meet him and drive to Tallahassee. Looking forward to it. My last OU game was in Norman back in 1985 against Nebraska (big OU romp/cold night game)."

"I will be going to Tallahassee for the OU-FSU game. Here is how it came to be:
"Back in the summer of 2009, a former Air Force colleague found me on Facebook and she told me she was going to be in Norman for a conference. We decided to get together for dinner while she was here. As we were catching up on our time in the Air Force, she mentioned that she had gone to FSU for her Master's Degree and was a huge FSU football fan.
"At that time, I knew OU had scheduled a series with FSU for 2010-2011, so I suggested she come back to Norman in 2010 for the game at OU and we'd meet in Tallahassee for the 2011 game at FSU. She agreed!
"I've attached two pictures. One is of us at our seats for the game in Norman in 2010. The other is her Facebook profile picture and status after the OU victory (below). We have the same bet for 2011.
"This is probably going to be OU's best non-conference, away game since Ohio State in 1977! This will be my third time to see OU and FSU play in person; the first being the 1981 Orange Bowl ("It's only a team like Oklahoma that could put on a show like that!" John Brodie, NBC sportscaster for that game after OU scored the 2-point conversion to win) and last year's game in Norman. I can't wait!"

"My name is Maggie and I'm a sophomore at OU. I'm going to the game with my aunt and two Seminole cousins (one of them is a junior at FSU). My older brother is a 2003 OU graduate and it was his sophomore year that OU beat FSU in the national championship. I'm hoping to get family bragging rights again! I'll be representing the crimson and cream on college gameday and in the FSU student section. I'm also from Orlando and know many people from high school that go to FSU. I've been waiting for this game all year!"

"I flew from the Sunshine Coast in Australia to Sydney then boarded a new double-decker Airbus A-380 bound for L.A. After arriving in Oklahoma, I had meetings for two days with visiting Australians then will fly to Ft. Walton and Saturday drive to Tallahassee, (a jet-lagged Sooner)."

"As soon as the announcement was made that OU and Florida State would play a home and home series, my son called to tell me about it. We decided then that we had to go to both games. I grew up in Norman, about two blocks from the stadium, and have been a Sooner fan all my life. Both of my parents, my great-aunt and numerous other relatives graduated from OU, as did my husband and I.
"My son had mixed loyalties, as he has been an FSU fan, as well as OU, since childhood. Since they played each other so rarely, it wasn't much of a problem for him. Last year we went to Norman for the game and had a fabulous time. We talked to a lot of FSU fans on the plane, at the airport as well as at the game. Without exception, they remarked about how nice all the OU fans had been and what a great time they had, in spite of losing.
"We have lived on the central east coast of Florida for many years. I can't wait to jump in the car on Friday and head to Tallahassee. I have my "There's Only One Oklahoma" shirt all ready to go. I'm looking forward to the Boomer Bash and then the game. I've been counting down the time since we first heard that OU would play in Tallahassee. I can't believe that it's finally here."

My fiance and I are coming across from England for the game and would love to share our experiences of our first-ever Sooners game. Flying into Miami on Friday evening and a mad scramble to drive up to Tally for the Saturday morning to enjoy the tailgating and then the game before going onwards to Norman for Missouri game!- Sam | Read more about Sam here...

"Trey (senior), Travis (junior), and I (senior) will be leaving Norman at 5 a.m. on Friday morning. Driving all day, 17 hours, to Tallahassee and staying with a friend in enemy territory. Coming back Sunday morning. Trey and I have been planning this as our senior trip since freshman year -- pumped up for it! Tweeting my experiences with the hashtag #OUtoFSUroadtrip."

"I'm flying to Jacksonville Friday, to see my pledge class sister (an her OU alum husband) and then going to the game. I haven't seen her in 18 years, as his military career has taken them around the world. But the love of The university and the bonds of Sooner football have us reconnecting in Florida for the game. I am a season ticket holder, so we purchased tix through OU and we have been planning this for a year. OU brought two small-town girls together and football keeps us there! Yes, we hope to go to NOLA (New Orleans for the National Championship). It's half way between us!"

"I'm packing up my bag and headed to Florida first thing Thursday morning (literally flight out at 6:30 a.m.)! I'm an alumnus, BBA MIS in 2009, and living in Tulsa now working in the construction business. I didn't make it to a single game last year because of a new job so I committed my Sooner pride to getting on a plane and cheering in Florida this year. Ironically enough, the last time I was in Florida was 2001 at the Orange Bowl in Miami where we won 13-2! I was only 15 then so it'll be interesting to see how much different it is to cheer for my Sooners as an adult!
"I am traveling with a group of about eight -- some of which are die hard FSU fans which should keep things interesting. These colors don't bleed, I'm packing my Bradford and Murray jerseys and my coach's sideline polo. I can't pull off the Bob Stoops visor but who besides him can? We are planning on spending the day at the beach in Panama City on Thursday, head to Tallahassee on Friday and pre-game party at the Plaza. Big game tailgating on Saturday afternoon and the big show Saturday night! I'm excited just thinking about it 72 hours away!"
- Austin

"I am leaving from Austin (the worst place to live when you are a dedicated Sooner fan) on Friday morning. Driving to Frisco, Texas, to pick up my friend from college. Then we are driving to DFW to fly to Columbus, Ga., at which point we are renting a car and then driving about three hours to Tallahassee. I found a steal on some tickets online, so we will be sitting on the 50 yard line row 8 on the Florida St. side. I am sure we will be relentlessly harassed, but hopefully they remember how they were treated in Norman last year.
"After we win, I have no idea where I will be celebrating, but I WILL be celebrating, probably late into the night. Then we have to do the reverse of that trip which will begin early Sunday morning. It will all be worth it and I hope to do an equally difficult trip to the national championship game. Did I mention I have to live in Austin, TX. I should get some bonus points, or sympathy votes for that!"

"My two brothers and I have all relocated out of the great state of Oklahoma for various career reasons. I have retained my season tickets and have organized several trips for my brothers and I to attend OU road games, including the BCS Championship game vs. Florida. This Friday, the three of us are headed to Florida to support the Sooners on to another victory over the Seminoles! Go Sooners!"

"My wife and I will be flying to Orlando on Friday, staying with a friend of mine from college, who is a FSU season ticket holder. We are sitting with him, in the FSU donor section. There is also an outside chance that we will be on the FSU Alumni charter bus from Orlando to Tallahassee and back. The drive back should be pretty interesting regardless."

"I am a die-hard OU fan from Louisiana and my best friend is a die-hard FSU fan. We are making the eleven-hour drive to Tallahassee on Saturday to watch our favorite teams go head-to-head. This will be a first for both os us, as neither of us have ever had the opportunity to attend a game. I'm certain I won't be the only OU fan there, but I definitely plan to make OU's presence known!"
