SoonerVision on Pace for Record

NORMAN, Okla. -- In a year when Landry Jones and Ryan Broyles have drawn a bead on the record books, it's Oklahoma's SoonerVision that may have the most eye-popping numbers of all.

Already one of the most aggressive production units in college athletics at 150 events per year, SoonerVision will soar past that number this year to an anticipated 220, and all of them will be shot in High Definition.

Five years ago, SoonerVision was doing 30-40 total live events, all on the web. None were on television.

"We'll do 150 live events alone this year with another 70 or so that are taped on top of that," said Brandon Meier, assistant athletics director for broadcast operations. "This is by far the most ambitious schedule we've ever taken on in a year, and that's saying something considering how ambitious we've been in recent years."

To meet the increased schedule, SoonerVision has added another 45 OU students in working roles and now has a total of 60 involved in the operation.

Recent upgrades at SoonerVision have created more opportunity. With two control rooms, SoonerVision can now operate the elaborate message boards at OU venues, while sending out a production to television outlets at the same time. In previous years, many of those telecasts were covered with three cameras. This year, that number leaps to 10.

"Viewers have become more sophisticated in their expectations and we've kept pace with our facilities and equipment. With 10 cameras, we'll provide a far more detailed product," said Meier. "We still have around 40 web-only events that will be shot with a single camera, but we're rapidly moving away from those days."

Of the 150 live events, 25 will be live game telecasts to the regional Sooner Sports Network affiliates. Those events also will go to the All Access area of SoonerSports.com. Another 25 will be games that are broadcasted live on Oklahoma Cox channels 3 and 703, and those also will be available on the All Access platform.

"This part of our operation could have been its own brand years ago, but we'll hold off on branding until we've done more work in expanding our overall television offerings," said Kenny Mossman, senior associate athletics director for communications. "What we've achieved to this point is greater access to our programs than we've ever offered before and yet we're still growing and reaching for more."

Eleven of Oklahoma's 21 sports will be impacted including first-ever events for soccer and volleyball.
