NORMAN, Okla. –The University of Oklahoma men's golf team completed its season opener Tuesday with a third-place finish at the 15-team Mark Simpson Colorado Invite in Erie, Colo.
The Sooners carded a third-round 288 (E) to finish the tournament with an 8-under-par 856, 16 strokes behind host Colorado and 11 shots behind New Mexico at the 7,741-yard, par-72 Colorado National Golf Club.
"Today was a tale of two stories," said third-year head coach Ryan Hybl. "We had no momentum and struggled mightily on the front nine, but luckily the boys were resilent on the back nine and made some birdies to finish even for the day."
Junior Abraham Ancer shot a 72 Tuesday and concluded the tournament in a tie for fifth place at -7. He finished four strokes behind co-medalists Beau Schoolcraft of Colorado and Alex Ching of San Diego. It was the fifth career top-10 finish for the second-year Sooner.
After shooting under par in his first two rounds as a Sooner on Monday, Michael Gellerman carded a 2-over-par 74 in the third round to finish even for the tournament. Gellerman dropped seven spots to finish in a tie for 18th place.
Michael Schoolcraft performed well as an individual for the Sooners. The sophomore shot a 72 in the third round and finished the two-day event at 1 under par, good for a 15th-place tie.
After a 2-over-par first round, Eduardo Castiello rebounded with even scores in the final two rounds, helping him climb into a tie for 24th place.
Sophomore Kevin Lee turned in OU's lowest score of the day, a 2-under 70. Lee shot under par in his final two rounds and finished in 32nd-place tie at 4 over par.
Charlie Saxon, shot a third-round 77 (+5). He finished the tournament in a tie for 62nd place at +12.
“We didn't have enough firepower this week,” said Hybl, “but it showed me a lot about where we are and how much work is in front of this young squad.”
The Sooners will be back in action Sept. 23-25 when they travel to Franklin, Tenn., for the Mason Rudolph Championship.
