NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma men's golf squad opens its 2011 season this week at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invite, to be held Sept. 12-13 at the 54-hole, 7,741-yard, par-72 Colorado National Golf Club in Erie, Colo.

“We are excited to get on the road,” said third-year OU head coach Ryan Hybl. “We have a really young squad going to this first event.”

Oklahoma's lineup will feature Abraham Ancer, Charlie Saxon, Michael Gellerman, Kevin Lee and Eduardo Castiello. Michael Schoolcraft will participate as an individual.

The Sooners will be led by Ancer, a junior. In his first season at OU last year, the Odessa Junior College transfer led the Sooners to their first trip to the NCAA Championships since 2006. On the way, Ancer collected 11 top-25 finishes in 13 events, including four top-10 and two medalist performances.

Castiello, a sophomore, hopes to build on his freshman season with the Sooners. The Guadalajara, Mexico, native competed in nine events last season, recording a 74.54 stroke average and a fourth-place finish at the Desert Shootout in March.

Lee competed in one event for the Sooners in 2010-11 as a freshman, tying for 39th place at the 102-person UCO/Kickingbird Classic.

Saxon and Gellerman will make their OU debuts as freshmen. Saxon recorded won the Oklahoma 3A State Championship in both his junior and senior seasons. Additionally, he placed second in the 2010 U.S. Amateur Qualifier.

Gellerman, the 2010 Kansas Junior Player of the Year runner-up, placed third in the 2010 Kansas 3A State Championship. He won the 2008 and 2009 state championships and was also named the 2009 Kansas Junior Player of the Year.

Schoolcraft competed in eight events as a freshman last year and posted three top-25 finishes, including a season-best 17th-place tie at the season-opening Mason Rudolph Championship.

The 15-team field will consist of Air Force, Colorado, Colorado State, Gonzaga, Houston Baptist, Kansas, Nevada, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Northern Colorado, Oklahoma, San Diego, Utah, UTEP and Wyoming.

The Sooners (25) are the highest ranked of the participating teams from the Golf World/NIKE preseason rankings.

"Our expectations are to go out, win this weekend and start the year off right,” said Hybl.
