NORMAN, Okla. - University of Oklahoma Head Cross Country Coach Martin Smith and Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Programs and Athletics Director Joe Castiglione announced the schedule for the upcoming 2011 Oklahoma cross country season Thursday. The schedule includes two in-state competitions and eight out-of-state competitions, including the Big 12 Championships on Oct. 29 in College Station, Texas. The 2011 slate is comprised of 10 competitions in a span of two months.
OU opens the season on Sept. 3 at the Tulsa Hurricane Invitational before traveling to Minneapolis, Minn., for the Roy Griak Invitational, at the University of Minnesota on Sept. 24. The program splits as it closes out the month on Sept. 30 as athletes compete in the Lehigh Brooks Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pa., and the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind.
October opens with the OSU Cowboy Jamboree on Oct. 1 in Stillwater before wrapping up the regular season on Oct. 15 at the Chile Pepper Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., and the Pre-Nationals meet in Terre Haute, Ind.
The Sooners will travel south for the Big 12 Championships as the conference meet is held Oct. 29 in College Station, Texas. NCAA championship competition begins in November with the NCAA Midwest Regional on Nov. 12 in DeKalb, Ill. The top two teams from the Midwest Regional automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships on Nov. 21 in Terre Haute, Ind.
The Oklahoma men's team enters 2011 coming off its most successful season in program history. The 2010 Sooners finished fifth at the NCAA Championships. OU returns all major contributors, in 2011, including four athletes who earned All-Midwest Region honors. Kevin Schwab, George Alex and Kevin Williams earned All-Big 12 honors last season and Schwab became Oklahoma's fifth All-American, leading the Sooners to their best finish since 1946.
The OU women's team returns its top two runners from the NCAA Midwest Regional in seniors Annie Martin and Molly Ferguson.
