COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Continuing in its tradition of dominance at the national level, the University of Oklahoma is sending eight gymnasts to the 2011 Visa U.S. Championships.

OU's Chris Stehl and Preston Ellsworth clinched spots in the 2011 Visa Championships Saturday at the men's national qualifier, held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Stehl and Ellsworth will join current Sooner gymnasts Jacob Dalton and Alex Naddour and OU letterwinners Jonathan Horton, Steven Legendre and Chris Brooks, who have already secured spots as members of the U.S. National Team. Incoming OU freshman Dylan Akers also qualified for a spot in the national championship at Saturday's qualifier.

Of the 42 competing male gymnasts, eight will be current or former Sooners.

"I'm happy to see Preston and Chris perform well and advance to the Visa Championships," said OU head coach Mark Williams. "We'll have a well represented group competing for spots on the United States National Team and the World Championships squad."

USA Gymnastics' national championship, the Visa Championships, will be held Aug. 17-20 at the Xcel Energy Center in Minneapolis, Minn. The event features the country's best gymnasts vying for national titles and spots on the U.S. National Team in men's, women's and rhythmic gymnastics.

Saturday's event was the last opportunity for the country's male gymnasts to qualify for the 2011 Visa Championships. More than 80 male gymnasts competed the qualifying event. The top 15 gymnasts using the Men's Program Committee 20-point system advanced to the Visa Championships

After successfully qualifying, Ellsworth claimed his first appearance in the Visa Championships. Stehl has qualified for the event two years in a row.

The Sooners found incredible success at the 2010 Visa Championships, with five OU gymnasts clinching spots on the U.S. National Team.

Horton, a four-time letterwinner at OU (2005-2008) and 2008 Olympic high bar silver-medalist, won the all-around title at both the 2009 and 2010 Visa Championships.
