Sooner Duo Heads to U.S. Qualifier

NORMAN, Okla. - In preparation for the 2011 Visa U.S. Championships, University of Oklahoma gymnasts Chris Stehl and Preston Ellsworth will compete in the men's qualifier Saturday at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The Visa Championships, held Aug. 17-20 at the Xcel Energy Center in Minneapolis, Minn., features the country's best gymnasts vying for national titles and spots on the U.S. National Team in men's, women's and rhythmic gymnastics.
Fellow Sooners Steven Legendre, Jacob Dalton and Alex Naddour have already clinched spots in the Visa Championships as members of Team USA.
"Both Preston and Chris have routines that are going to score high enough to give them enough points to make it in," said OU Assistant Coach Guard Young, who will be traveling with the duo to Colorado. "They just need to stay on the equipment. If they fall off three or four times then it'll be close. If they go there, stay on the equipment and do their job, they shouldn't have a problem."
Saturday's event is the last opportunity for the country's male gymnasts to qualify for the 2011 Visa Championships. More than 80 male gymnasts are expected to compete in the qualifying event.
Stehl competed in last year's Men's Qualifier, where he clinched a spot in the 2010 Visa Championships.
For the senior division, the top 15 gymnasts using the Men's Program Committee 20-point system will advance to the Visa Championships, and additional athletes may be selected as needed to complete the 42-man Visa Championships field.
