Stillwater, Okla. -- The 23rd-ranked Oklahoma men's golf team's season came to a close Thursday as it shot a third-round 313 (+25) to finish the stroke play portion of the NCAA Championship in 28th place in Stillwater, Okla. The Sooners, who registered a three-round 930 (+66) at the 7,416-yard, par-72 Karsten Creek Golf Club, needed a top-8 finish in order to advance to Friday's first round of match play, but could never find their rhythm after a rough start Tuesday.
“We had a terrible week at Karsten,” said second-year OU head coach Ryan Hybl, “but we are not going to let it stop our momentum heading into the summer with our guys, recruiting and next year.”
In his last round as a Sooner, senior Ryan Sirman, who led the team in this week's first two rounds, tied his season-high score for 18 holes with a 5-over par 77 Thursday. Sirman entered the day tied for 11th place, but dropped nine spots, finishing in a tie for 20th place out of 155 golfers at 4 over par.
Sirman ended his career at Oklahoma with a 74.39 career stroke average. The lone senior in the regular OU lineup, he finished the season with a 72.32 average, an improvement of more than three strokes per round over his 75.69 average entering the year. Sirman recorded eight top-20 and four top-10 finishes this season.
“Sirman has been a great teammate and a true leader,” said Hybl. “I named him captain of this year's team because of his hard work and dedication to becoming better.”
Sophomore Abraham Ancer shot a third-round 75 (+3) and his 12-over-par 228 total represented a season high. Ancer was coming off a first-place 6-under-par performance at the NCAA East Regional in Radford, Va., the second win of his debut OU season. Ancer finished the NCAA Championship tied for 81st place.
Freshman Michael Schoolcraft fired an 8-over 80 Thursday, his best round of the tournament, while juniors Riley Pumphrey and Ben Klaus shot 81 and 86, respectively. Pumphrey finished the tournament tied for 121st place at +20, Schoolcraft tied for 145th place at +30 and Klaus finished in 153th place at +44.
UCLA (+8) overtook Georgia Tech (+11), which led through the first two rounds, for first place Thursday, while top-ranked and host Oklahoma State finished tied for third with Illinois (+15). Georgia, Hybl's alma mater, finished fifth at 20 over par. Ohio State (+23), Augusta State (+24) and Duke (+25) also advanced to match play competition.
Big 12 member Texas A&M (+26) just missed advancing by one stroke, finishing in ninth place. Texas finished at 31 over par and in a tie for 12th place.
"This year was a great building block for us and we have to continue to get better," said Hybl.
