NORMAN, Okla. -- On the strength of Abraham Ancer's first-place finish, the 24th-ranked Oklahoma men's golf team secured a berth to the NCAA Men's Golf Championship for the first time since 2006 by taking third place at the NCAA East Regional Saturday in Radford, Va. The Sooners shot a third-round 287 (-1), their best of the tournament, at the 7,685-yard, par-72 Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech to finish the event at +11.
OU, which finished 10 shots behind No. 16 Duke and six strokes behind No. 2 Georgia Tech, needed to finish in fifth place or better to qualify for the NCAA Championship, to be played May 31-June 5 at Karsten Creek Golf Course in Stillwater, Okla. The Sooners advanced easily, finishing 22 shots clear of sixth-place Virginia Tech.
"This is such big news for the direction our program is heading," said second-year OU head coach Ryan Hybl. "It was exciting to see our guys come out and perform. We are just ecstatic."
Saturday's start was delayed 40 minutes due to heavy fog, but that did not distract the Sooners from the mindset second-year OU head coach Ryan Hybl had preached all week.
Ancer fired a 3-under 69 Saturday, his best round of the tournament, to finish at 6 under par and on top of the 75-player field. The sophomore racked up five birdies on the day en route to his fourth top-10 finish and second victory of the year. He finished two shots ahead of a trio golfers.
"I'm so proud of Abe. He played fantastic all week," said Hybl. "He wanted to know where he was on the leaderboard because he wanted to win, and I like that. I expect the same from him at the NCAA Championship."
Senior Ryan Sirman also recorded his best round of the regional by draining four birdies and carding a 2-under 70. Sirman moved up 12 spots on the leaderboard from Friday into a tie for 10th place at +3.
Junior Riley Pumphrey and Junior Ben Klaus shot a 2-over 74 in the final round while freshman Michael Schoolcraft shot an 8-over 80. Pumphrey finished in 28th place at +8, Klaus moved up eight spots to 37th place at +11 and Schoolcraft took 51st place at +15.
"It has been a respectable year for us, but this was the best day of the year in terms of scores, attitudes and confidence," said Hybl. "It was good to see them perform today after the struggle we had closing at the Aggie Invitational and Big 12 Championship."
No. 8 LSU overtook Oklahoma on the leaderboard for a short time Saturday but finished five shots behind the Sooners at +16. No. 33 Kent State rounded out the top five at +29.
"We are excited to be at Karsten and get as many people as possible to come out and support our boys during this special time in our program," said Hybl"
OU's NCAA Men's Golf Championship appearance will mark its 32nd in school history.
