NORMAN, Okla. – The No. 8 Oklahoma baseball team completed a doubleheader sweep over New Mexico with an 8-3 victory in the second game on Saturday evening at L. Dale Mitchell Park.

The win was the Sooners eighth straight after posting an 8-3 win earlier this afternoon. The Sooners improved to 38-13 while New Mexico dropped to 16-35.

Just like games one and two in the series, OU wasted little time in putting runs up on the board. OU took a 3-0 lead in the first inning Saturday night and pulled away with runs in the third, fourth, fifth and eighth innings.

The OU offense pounded out 12 hits and stole a season-high seven bases. Cale Ellis and Ricky Eisenberg led the charge with two hits a piece, while Garrett Buechele drove in a game-high two runs.

“You think about the first three games (of the series), it's been a little bit of everybody,” said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway on the balanced wins in the series. “We're playing better, we're doing what we have to do to win everyday.”

Oklahoma starting pitcher Jordan John improved to 4-0 and recorded eight strikeouts in seven innings for the Sooners. John tied a career high with seven innings pitched and tossed a career-high 112 pitches. Since making his first career weekend start last Sunday, John has combined for 13 innings with 16 strikeouts and four earned runs allowed in the last two outings.

“I appreciate the coaches having the confidence in me,” said Jordan John. “I was a little shaky in the beginning. In the later innings, when I started mixing better and got my change-up and slider working, I was able to mix well to hitters and get ground balls and get outs, instead of so many hits.”

New Mexico starter Sam Wilson (2-3) was chased out in the first inning after allowing three runs off of three hits.

The Sooners and Lobos will wrap up the weekend series tomorrow, Sunday May 15 at 1 p.m. at L. Dale Mitchell Park. Sunday marks the final regular season home game for 10 OU seniors (Elliott Blair, Tyler Brady, Anthony Collazo, Ryan Duke, Ricky Eisenberg, Cale Ellis, Casey Johnson, Michael Rocha, Tyson Seng and Bobby Shore).

“The energy it's going to take to come back tomorrow, after already playing three games, I think is real important for us,” added Golloway. “I am excited for our guys to come out tomorrow and hopefully get our legs back under us. We played a lot of innings today but so did they, and we need to finish this thing off.”

The finale will be broadcast live on the Sooner Sports Network, KREF 1400 AM, and televised by SSN on Cox Ch. 3 (703 HD) in Oklahoma City and Tulsa.
