The Bedlam game was the first on the OU campus since 1996 ... Dillon Overton tossed his sixth relief appearance without allowing a run on Tuesday ... In seven relief appearances, Overton has allowed just one run in 24.2 innings with 23 strikeouts ... Garrett Buechele extended his hitting streak to a season-high 11 games with a two-run single in the third inning ... He is hitting .422 (19-for-45) in that span with 16 RBIs ... NORMAN, Okla. -- The seventh-ranked Oklahoma baseball team defeated No. 23 Oklahoma State, 8-3, at L. Dale Mitchell Park in Norman on Tuesday night.

The win, OU's fifth straight, took the Sooners' overall record to 23-6 while the Cowboys dropped to 21-8.

The Sooners' Bedlam victory was fueled by the relief pitching of freshman left-hander Dillon Overton who improved to 5-2.

The Cowboys got off to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the second against OU's starting pitcher, Jack Mayfield, but with two runners on base, Overton took the hill and worked his way out of the jam with the first of eight strikeouts on the night.

The Weatherford, Okla., native was lights out for the rest of game, pitching 6.1 scoreless innings. Overton blanked the Cowboys with four hits allowed and a season-high eight strikeouts.

“I've been watching games like this on TV since I was a little kid,” Overton said. “It was an honor to come here and play in a game like this. It was just two great teams battling it out.”

Third baseman Garrett Buechele led the Sooner offense, collecting four RBIs on two hits. Cody Reine also contributed with a deep solo homerun.

“We're not a team that's going to panic — ever,” Buechele said. “Something that is ingrained in our team is that we're really calm and confident. We know we can score runs and that came through tonight.”

Buechele started the rally in the third inning with a two-run single up the middle that extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Casey Johnson's bases-loaded walk tied the game at three in the third and OU took its first lead with RBIs from Buechele and Cameron Seitzer in the fourth.

OU tacked on another run in the fifth off Cody Reine's second homer of the year, a blast to right-center field that cleared the 411 sign on the fence. In the sixth inning, tacked on two more runs to put the game out of reach. The first six hitters in the Sooner lineup each recorded two hits on the night.

“From the third through the sixth inning we were really special,” OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway said. “We put a lot of pressure on them and their defense. We were able to push the buttons.”

The midweek non-conference matchup was played in front of 2,852 fans, the eighth largest regular-season crowd in OU history (11th best overall).

Oklahoma has won six out of the last nine Bedlam games and will meet the Cowboys again in just over a week in the three-game series split between Tulsa and Oklahoma City (April 15-17).

Next up for the Sooners is a trip to Manhattan, Kan., as they kick off a three-game weekend series with Kansas State on Friday.
