FORT WORTH -- The No. 10 Sooners completed a season sweep and eighth straight win over No. 7 TCU on Tuesday with a 7-4 victory in front of 5,261 fans in Fort Worth, the third largest crowd at Lupton Stadium.
OU led 7-3 headed to the bottom of the ninth, which saw the Horned Frogs battle and load the bases, but freshman Jordan John worked out of the jam.
John was one of three OU pitchers to have solid outings on Tuesday as Bobby Shore started three innings before giving way to freshman Dillon Overton. Overton tossed four innings with one hit allowed to improve to 6-3 and retired 10 straight batters at one point to hold the TCU offense at bay.
'We played well. I think the way we utilized a lot of pitchers,” said head coach Sunny Golloway who recorded his 250th victory at Oklahoma. “We have to keep Bobby Shore and Dillon Overton fresh for the weekend and our guys pitched with poise.
The win was the Sooners' fourth straight and upped their record to 30-11 while the Horned Frogs fell to 29-13. TCU starter Andrew Mitchell took his first loss of the year after being relieved in the fourth.
“They are going to battle at home, we know that, and we knew they would battle us in Norman,” added Golloway. “It's a fun rivalry and I can't say enough about the job Jim Schlossnagle has done with TCU. I think we are fortunate to play each other and I think we make each other better.”
The Sooners are 11-2 under Golloway against the No. 9 Horned Frogs after topping them 13-6 earlier this season on April 12 when TCU was ranked No. 9. On Tuesday, the OU offense outhit TCU 10-7 and took advantage of four Horned Frog errors.
The Sooners struck early when Caleb Bushyhead scored off of an RBI double by Garrett Buechele in the top of the first. The base hit by Buechele extended his hitting streak to 10 games, which also features a streak of seven straight games with at least one RBI.
The Sooner lead was pushed to 3-0 after Oklahoma tacked on two more quick runs in the second thanks to a couple TCU errors.
After TCU got its first run in the bottom of the second, Casey Johnson brought in Tyler Ogle in the top of the third on his second triple of the season in the top of the third.
Evan Mistich scored his second run of the night in the top of the sixth off of an Eric Ross single. Mistich was 3-4 on the night with a double and a pair of singles.
Johnson collected a run in the eighth, scoring on a single by Mistich. The Sooners' final score was recorded by Eric Ross, who advanced home on a balk in the ninth inning.
Next up, the Sooners travel to No. 4 Texas for a three-game Big 12 series this weekend. The series gets started on Friday, April 29 at 6 p.m. in Austin, Texas. Saturday's game, set for a national television broadcast on Fox Sports Southwest, is slated for a 11:30 a.m. first pitch. Sunday's finale is set for 1 p.m. and will be televised by ESPNU. All three games can be heard on the Sooner Sports Network, KREF 1400 AM with Chuck Kelly and Ross Hubbard.
“The win (tonight) is important as they are in the top 10,” said Golloway. “But the weekend is the most important part of the week. We have to go on the road and secure a Big 12 series win at Texas.”
