Sooners Stand Second At Big 12 Championships

AMES, Iowa -- Five Sooner wrestlers advanced to the finals at the Big 12 Championships Saturday afternoon in front of 2,845 inside the Hilton Coliseum. The Sooners stand second after session one, trailing Oklahoma State by just 1.5 points (61-59.5).

Jarrod Patterson (125 pounds), Jordan Keller (133), Zack Bailey (141), Tyler Caldwell (165) and Nathan Fernandez (HWT) each won their opening round match and will compete for titles at 7 p.m. Saturday evening.

This evening Patterson will take on Nebraska's David Klingsheim, Keller battles OSU's Jordan Oliver, Bailey challenges of MU's Todd Schavrien, Caldwell hopes to upset Nebraska's top-ranked Jordan Burroughs and Fernandez takes on MU's Dom Bradley.

Finishing third in their respective weight classes were Matt Lester (149), Chase Nelson (157) and Erich Schmidtke (184).

Lester, the No. 2 seed, was upset by Missouri's Kyle Bradley in the first round, 2-0, but rounded out the day downing Nebraska's Ross Grande and ISU's Max Mayfield, 6-3.

Nelson dropped a highly-contested, 4-2, bout with Missouri's Nick Gregoris to start the day. Nelson then defeated NU's Tyler Koehn, 4-1, and finished third after pinning Iowa State's Trent Weatherman in 1:05. Nelson has now pinned Weatherman twice this year after earning a fall over the Cyclone back in January.

Schmidtke found similar results after dropping his first match to Nebraska's Josh Ihnen, 5-1. The junior rallied to oust the Tigers' Mike Larson, 3-1, and Iowa State's Cole Shafer, 3-1.
