SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The No. 2 University of Oklahoma baseball team equaled its best start to a season after improving to 12-0 with a 7-1 victory at San Diego (3-6) on Friday.
Senior Bobby Shore tossed the second straight complete game for the Sooners, who also started 12-0 back in 1998. Fellow senior Michael Rocha shut out San Diego State yesterday in his second complete game.
The 12-game winning streak is also the second best under head coach Sunny Golloway, who led Oklahoma to 13 consecutive victories in 2006.
“I am really proud of the way our guys played and the way we are handling playing on the road,” said Golloway. “We just need to stay humble and take things one game at a time.”
For the sixth straight game and ninth time in 2011, the Sooner offense plated the game's first run on Tyler Ogle's RBI double in the third inning. The Sooners hit through the order in the third inning and took a 4-0 lead after Evan Mistich had an RBI single and then later converted on a double steal with Cody Reine at third base. The fourth run in the inning came on a throwing error by third baseman Kris Bryant.
Shore ran into trouble in the fourth inning after surrendering three straight singles to begin the frame. However, the senior hurler battled out of the frame unscathed to hold the Sooners' 4-0 lead.
It marked the first complete game for Shore, who improved to 2-0 after his best outing of 2011. The outing featured two five-pitch innings, a six-pitch inning and five frames of facing the minimum amount of batters.
“It felt good to come back in my home state and pitch against a good team,” said Shore, a native of nearby Oceanside, Calif. “I had my stuff working and I was finding the strike zone.”
USD starter Calvin Drummond (1-1) was tagged for his first loss with four runs off seven hits (three earned) through five innings on the mound.
In the eighth inning, the Sooners put the game out of reach as Garrett Buechele drove in two RBIs on a single up the middle. Buechele had a game-high two RBIs while Mistich tied a career high with four base knocks.
The Toreros finally broke through in the ninth inning with Danny Hawksley's RBI single. While Shore was dominant in the start, he also received solid defensive play behind him.
“When you pitch and play good defense, you give yourself a great chance to win,” added Golloway. “That's what we did today.”
Oklahoma returns to action tournament on Saturday with a 3 p.m. CT game against No. 14 Cal. The game will be played at Tony Gwynn Stadium on the campus of San Diego State University and it can be heard on the Sooners' flagship station, KREF 1400 AM.
The Sooners will start junior Burch Smith (1-0) opposite the Bears' Justin Jones (1-0). Cal (6-1) is in action Friday night at San Diego State (8 p.m. CT).
