NORMAN, Okla. - Taylor Edwards hit a solo home run to kick start a three-run third inning for the 14th-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers Saturday afternoon in a 4-1 win over 12th-ranked Oklahoma. The Sooners (26-9, 0-1 Big 12) responded with a solo home from Katie Norris in the bottom half of the frame but were unable to come from behind to defeat Nebraska (27-3, 1-0 Big 12).
Edwards' home run led off the third and Brooke Thomason drew a walk before Heidi Foland's one-out double gave Nebraska a 2-0 lead. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Foland then scored on Tatum Edwards' single up the middle.
Norris responded with her solo home run in the bottom half the inning. The blast to left field was her first of the season.
After a scoreless fourth inning, Nebraska tacked on a single run in the fifth. Taylor Edwards reached on a walk advanced to second on a passed ball and Thomason' single down the left-field line gave the Huskers runners at the corners with no outs. Taylor Edwards then scored on a fielder's choice from Julie Bretchel to push the lead to its eventual final score, 4-1.
Keilani Ricketts (14-5) threw her 17th complete game of the year, allowing four earned runs on three walks and seven hits. Ricketts struck out 13 to move her single season total to 213. Ashley Hagemann (19-2) picked up the win for Nebraska, holding the Sooners to the one earned run on five hits and two walks. She struck out eight.
Norris was the only Sooner to record multiple hits as she ended the day 2-for-3. Destinee Martinez, Haley Nix and Chana'e Jones recorded OU's other hits.
Taylor Edwards led the Cornhuskers at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one walk. Foland also went 2-for-4 with a run driven in and one scored. Leadoff hitter Nikki Haget, Thomason and Tatum Edwards had the other hits for Nebraska.
Nebraska ended the game with nine runners left on base, while the Sooners left eight on.
