Sooners Fall in Final Game of A&M Series

NORMAN, Okla. -- The Sooners' late rally came up short Sunday afternoon as No. 11 Texas A&M concluded the three-game set against No. 2 Oklahoma with a 5-2 victory to claim the series victory, 2-1.
Oklahoma (17-5, 1-2 Big 12) mounted potential rallies in the eighth and ninth inning with two runners on in each frame, but the offense came up short and stranded 10 Sooners overall on the afternoon.
The Sooners collected 10 base hits on the afternoon, but were unable to wrap up the series victory against the Aggies (15-5, 2-1), who combined for 30 hits in the final two games of the set.
"We are not a good baseball team right now," said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. "We have a lot of work to do. The good thing is we have time to practice to get better. It comes down to if we can get the players' attention."
OU starting pitcher Burch Smith held Texas A&M early, but the Aggies struck first in the top of the second inning for the 1-0 lead. The visitors chased Smith (2-2) after 3 2/3 innings of seven-hit baseball and three runs allowed.
Sooner designated hitter Evan Mistich finished with a game-high three hits to lead the offense, while third baseman Garrett Buechele drove in both runs.
"Evan's been a good player for us all year," added Golloway.
Buechele's first RBI came in the second inning on a groundout to tie the game at one run apiece. The second was scored on his sixth home run of the year in the fifth inning.
The homer, OU's first in the last seven games, cut the Texas A&M lead down to 3-2, but the Aggies jumped back on top in the top of the seventh inning on Jacob House's two-run double off Bobby Shore.
"Today, Bobby pitched really well in relief, but he made one mistake," said Golloway on the extra-base hit by House. "To me, that was the difference in the game. That one pitching mistake is highlighted because we're not hitting."
Texas A&M, which leads the Big 12 in team earned-run average, received another strong outing from a starting pitcher on Sunday. Ross Stripling tossed six innings to improve to 4-1 with seven strikeouts. He allowed just two Sooner runs off seven hits.
Oklahoma returns to action on Friday, March 25 to face the Missouri Tigers in Columbia, Mo. at 6 p.m. The entire three-game series can be heard on the Sooner Sports Network, KREF 1400 AM.
