TEMPE, Ariz. -- A rally in the sixth inning by No. 8 Arizona State resulted in a 6-4 loss by No. 2 Oklahoma on Wednesday at Packard Stadium. The loss was the third straight for OU, which dropped to 16-3. The Sun Devils improved to 13-3.
“I thought we played better,” said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. “We played better, we just lost the ball game. We did some things well, but we still have some things we have to get better at.”
OU held a 4-3 after the top of the fourth, but it slipped away as the Sun Devils plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with reliever Jack Mayfield (0-1) on the mound. The sophomore right-hander was solid in his first 3 1/3 innings after being summoned from the bullpen in the second inning.
Mayfield relieved OU starter Jordan John in the second inning and took over a bases-loaded situation, despite allowing his first inherited runner to score this season, the Sooners escaped the threat down 3-1.
For the first time in six games, OU scored the game's initial run on Chris Ellison's sacrifice squeeze bunt. The fielder's choice by Ellison plated Tyler Ogle, who walked to lead off the frame and advanced to third on Cameron Seitzer's double to left field.
The Sooner lead was quickly erased in the bottom of the second as the Sun Devils chased OU starter Jordan John out of the game with three runs. John allowed all three runs in 1 1/3 innings, but only two were earned as he committed an error on a slow chopper back to him on the second ASU run scored.
In the third inning, the OU offense went back to work as Garrett Buechele collected his second hit of the game on a double to left center. After a walk by Evan Mistich, Tyler Ogle delivered a bases-clearing double that nearly cleared the fence in left-center field.
The Sooners' offense kept pounding ASU starter Jake Barrett (1-1) in the fourth with two hits, including Max White's RBI single up the middle to plate Ellison. Barrett, who started last Friday's game for ASU versus Auburn, finished with 11 strikeouts in six innings of work.
Mayfield's solid relief appearance was spoiled in the sixth inning as the Sun Devils plated three runs, one off a wild pitch, another off a RBI single by Riccio Torrez, and the final off an attempted double steal.
OU returns home to begin Big 12 play against No. 11 Texas A&M (13-4). The Sooners and Aggies begin the series at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, March 18 at L. Dale Mitchell Park. Saturday's game is slated for a 2 p.m. first pitch and Sunday's finale will get underway at 1 p.m.
The Sooner Sports Network will have complete coverage of the weekend. All three games will be broadcast live on KREF 1400 AM and televised live on Cox Ch. 3 in Oklahoma City and Tulsa.
