NORMAN, Okla. -- The No. 2 Oklahoma baseball team suffered its first loss of the season Sunday, losing to Arkansas-Little Rock, 7-0.
The Sooners (16-1) came into Sunday's matchup as the only undefeated team in NCAA Division I baseball. Their 16-0 start was the best in program history, and tied for the best start by a Big 12 team since the conference formed in 1997 (Texas in 2005).
"When we were the only undefeated team in Division I baseball, I think an awful lot was made of that. And its not a bad thing, its a good thing. But I did feel some pressure with our club yesterday, a hard-fought 2-1 victory. I had given it some thought, about some point, we are going to lose a game.
"We're competitors, and we don't want to lose, you don't plan to lose, but it happens," said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. "So now we have to see how we deal with it and move forward. I am sure, knowing our club and the makeup, its going to be a positive."
The Sooners put six pitchers on the mound in their first loss of the season, a junior right-hander Burch Smith took the decision to fall to 2-1.
Trojan starting pitcher Calvin Drinnen (2-1) pitched a complete game shutout, limiting Oklahoma to two hits, as the Trojans improved to 7-8 on the season.
"Today, Calvin Drinnen from Arkansas-Little Rock pitched terrific. He deserved the victory," said Golloway. "His team played terrific with him ,and behind him and offensively. And we lost and we didn't play well."
UALR struck early, scoring Cameron Bentley in the top of the second. The Sooners forced their way out of further damage courtesy of an unassisted double play by shortstop Caleb Bushyhead with one out and the bases loaded.
The Trojans tacked on three more runs in the top of the fifth, finishing Smith's outing after 4.2 innings pitched, surrendering four runs, all earned, on eight hits. The junior struck out five UALR batters.
Trojan shortstop Greg Garcia picked up his second RBI of the day in the top of the eighth to extend UALR's lead to five. Garcia was 3-for-4 on the day with a double and a run scored.
The Sooners surrendered two more runs to the Trojans in the top of the ninth.
Garrett Buechele had one of the Sooners' two hits, along with Evan Mistich, to extend his hitting streak to seven games.
OU hits the road for a top 10 matchup at No. 9 Arizona State. The two-game midweek set begins on Tuesday, March 15 at 8:30 p.m. CT. Game two is slated for an 8:30 p.m. first pitch on Wednesday, March 16 and will be televised by FSN Arizona. After the midweek games, OU returns home to begin Big 12 play against No. 14 Texas A&M (March 18-20).
"Right now, I think we are going to be able to play a lot looser and focus on getting better, and not so much about the streak and being undefeated," added Golloway. "We are excited about playing Arizona State, they're ranked in the top 10, and then we come home and open Big 12."
