NORMAN, Okla. -- USA Baseball announced its preseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List Thursday and Oklahoma junior third baseman Garrett Buechele was one of five players representing the Big 12 Conference. The watch list
marks USA Baseball's first step toward identifying the top amateur baseball player in the country. Sponsored by Major League Baseball, the Golden Spikes Award will be presented in 2011 for the 34th time.
Buechele was joined by Texas' Taylor Jungmann and Cole Green, Texas A&M's John Stilson and Kansas State's Nick Martini. The complete watch list features 50 of the nation's top amateur players, and it will be a “rolling” list to ensure that athletes can play themselves into consideration for the Golden Spikes Award, to be presented live on Monday, July 11, at the 2011 Major League Baseball All-Star FanFest in Phoenix, Ariz.
It marks the first such selection for Buechele, who was tabbed a preseason All-American following the Sooners' postseason run that ended after three games in the College World Series. Buechele led OU in every offensive category en route to the program's 10th CWS appearance and first since 1995.
The Arlington, Texas, native hit .359 last season with 17 homers, 65 RBIs and a .630 slugging percentage en route to being selected in the 18th round of the 2010 MLB Draft by the Texas Rangers.
He is the second Sooner to appear on the award's list under head coach Sunny Golloway's watch (J.T. Wise in 2009).
Buechele is one of four Sooners selected by his teammates to captain the 2011 squad. He was also a team captain in 2010, a year after being named the 2009 Big 12 Freshman of the Year. He is joined by junior Tyler Ogle and seniors Elliott Blair and Michael Rocha in 2011.
A former walk-on, Buechele redshirted his first year at Oklahoma in 2008. Since then, he is hitting .356 with 21 homers and 105 RBIs in 128 starts.
Following the release of a second, 60-player watch list to be named on Tuesday, May 3, USA Baseball officials will announce to the 30 semifinalists for the 2011 Golden Spikes Award on Tuesday, May 31. The list of 30 will then be sent to a voting body consisting of select professional baseball personnel, past USA Baseball National Team coaches and press officers, members of media that closely follow the amateur game, and current USA Baseball staff, representing a group of nearly 200 voters in total.
Fan voting will once again be a part of the Golden Spikes Award in 2011. Tuesday, May 31 marks the day when college baseball fans from across the country will be able to vote for their favorite player for the Golden Spikes Award on GoldenSpikesAward.com. As part of this selection process all voters will be asked to choose five players from the list of 30 names. On Tuesday, June 7, USA Baseball will announce the five finalists, and voting will once again commence that same day.
The 2011 USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award will be presented July 11 on an award show via live telecast from Phoenix, Ariz. on GoldenSpikesAward.com, USABaseball.com and MLB.com in conjunction with All-Star FanFest.
