NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma's men's golf team finished in second place at the 17-team UTSA Oak Hills Invitational in San Antonio, Texas, with its final-round 285 (+1) Tuesday. The Sooners' third-round score was the best of the day at the 6,765-yard, par-71 Oak Hills Country Club.

With a three-round 849 (-3), OU finished 12 shots behind champion Texas Tech and edged third-place North Texas by one stroke. Tulsa claimed fourth place with an 854, five shots behind the Sooners.

"This is a great finish for us," said OU men's head golf coach Ryan Hybl of his team's season-best performance. "We're proud of our guys and the way they executed."

Four Sooners finished in the top 12 among the 95 competitors. Junior Riley Pumphrey (-5, -2, +5), who led the field after Monday's first round and stood in second after the next 18 holes, finished tied for sixth place at -2 after recording a final-round 76.

Senior Ryan Sirman (+1, E, -2) shot a third-round 69, OU's best score of the day, and finished tied for 12th with a 1-under 212. Sirman improved with each round and recorded four birdies on the final 18.

Sophomore Abraham Ancer (-1, E, +1) finished tied for 12th place with a three-round 213 (E) after carding a final-round 72.

Freshman Eduardo Castiello (+2, +2, E) was also solid, finishing tied for 21st at 217 (+4) following his third-round 71. He recorded 12 pars and three birdies on the day. Sophomore Will Kropp (+9, +1, +2) tied for 51st place with a 225 (+12).

Although his performance did not count toward OU's team score, junior Ben Klaus (-1, -5, +2)was the Sooners' top finisher in second place. He shot a final-round 73 en route to a three-round 209 (-4) and finished behind medalist Nils Floren of Texas Tech by just one stroke. Klaus recorded nine birdies and two eagles on the tournament, his first appearance of the 2010-11 season.

The Sooners will resume play Feb. 20-22 at the Puerto Rico Classic in San Juan, P.R.
