LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Oklahoma's Sharane Campbell was voted the Big 12 Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week by a media panel, the conference announced Monday.
Campbell scored a career-high 19 points to lead OU to an 89-57 win over Ohio in the first game at the Duel in the Desert tournament. The 5-10 guard shot perfectly in the first half, hitting on six field goals and two free throws for 14 points, eclipsing her previous career high in nine minutes.
The Spencer, Okla., native scored 11 points in the midst of a 15-2 run that increased OU's lead from 14-7 to 31-9 in 3 1/2 minutes. Campbell's only missed field goal came late in the second half and ended a streak of 13 consecutive makes dating back four games.
Campbell is the Sooners second newcomer to earn weekly honors. DaShawn Harden was the season's first Big 12 Freshman of the Week.
The freshman is OU's fourth-leading scorer, averaging 8.8 points, and has a field goal percentage of 62 percent (24-of-39).
Campbell and the Sooners face Syracuse in the second day of the Duel in the Desert at UNLV's COX Pavilion Monday at 4:30 p.m. Central.
