Three Sooners Earn OCU Open Titles

OKLAHOMA CITY - Three Sooners - Cody Brewer, Ian Fisher and Chase Nelson -- claimed individual titles at the Oklahoma City Open Sunday, Nov. 6, at the Abe Lemons Arena on the OCU campus.

"This was great for our guys to go out and take over at a good tournament," head coach Mark Cody said. "Our guys took advantage and competed at a high level."

Brewer, a freshman from Kansas City, Mo., won four straight matches to claim the 133 pound title. In route to the title bout, he had a pin, major decision and technical fall. In the finals, Brewer faced fellow Sooner Derek Geiges. Brewer took the championship bout, 3-1.

Redshirt freshman Ian Fisher earned the 141 pound crown after he went earned a fall, major decision and two victories by decision. Again, two Sooners squared off in the finals as Fisher narrowly edged OU's Scott Chene, 2-0.

The Sooners final champion was 2010-11 NCAA qualifier Chase Nelson. On the day Nelson earned pins in each of his matches. In the 165 pound championship match, Nelson earned a fall in 2:03 over OCU's Kevin Hardy.

Two other Sooners finished in second place. Justin DeAngelis fell just shy of claiming Oklahoma's fourth champion at the event after he fell to Oklahoma City's Cameron Ream in the finals of the 149 pound bracket. DeAngelis had two technical falls and a victory by decision leading up to the title match. Heavyweight Kyle Colling went 3-1 with his only loss coming to Nick Taul of MVC. In total, four Sooners finished in second.

Four other Sooners finished the Open with a third place finish which included: Dustin Reed (4-1) at 133 pounds, Dalton Dennis (149 pounds) after going an impressive 6-1, Kyle Detmer at 165 (3-1) and Andrew Spangler (4-1) at 174 pounds.

Other Sooners competing in the Open include: Josh Durham, Dillon Dennis, Sean Datte and Marcus Armato.

Next up, the Sooners travel to Brockport, N.Y., in search of their 13th-straight Brockport/Oklahoma Gold title on Saturday, Nov. 12.
